Amateur baseball: Alexandria comes back to beat Mudcats

Down 4-0, Alexandria came back to beat the Parkston Mudcats 5-4 in 10 innings in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game Sunday.

ALEXANDRIA — Down 4-0, Alexandria came back to beat the Parkston Mudcats 5-4 in 10 innings in a Sunshine League amateur baseball game Sunday.

Parkston had a 4-0 lead after four innings, but Alexandria scored one run in the sixth inning, three in the seventh and one run in the 10th for the win.

Alexandria improves to 4-2 and 4-1 in the Sunshine League.

Jordan Gau went all 10 innings for the win as he gave up four runs — three earned — on nine hits and struck out seven.

Casey Solem had two home runs in the win. He hit a solo home run and a three-run home run. Gau also went 3-for-4 and Chris Marek went 2-for-5.

Brady Nolz also went all 10 innings for Parkston and gave up 13 hits and struck out eight batters.

Jeff Harris was 2-for-4 for Parkston.

Alexandria plays at 8 p.m. Thursday in Delmont.

Mitchell 13, Delmont 8

Mitchell defeated Delmont 13-8 Sunday at Cadwell Park in Sunshine League amateur baseball action.

Mitchell improves to 6-1 overall and 4-1 in the Sunshine League.

Mitchell had 17 hits in the game as Beau Van Overschelde led the Mad Dogs with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. Alex Loes added a double and single and scored twice, Arin Boschee had a three-RBI double, Billy Hamilton had two doubles and two RBIs and Adam Kaus had two doubles, a single and a run scored.

Jamie Huber was the winning pitcher for Mitchell as he went four innings and gave up four earned runs on five hits. Jason Skinner came on in the fifth and gave up three runs on five hits and struck out three.

Tom Heisinger gave up six runs in an inning to take the loss for Delmont.

Cassius Kocer had a triple and scored twice for Delmont.

Mitchell plays at 8 p.m. Thursday at home in Cadwell Park against the Parkston Rockbass.

Dimock-Emery 16, Platte 3 (7 innings)

PLATTE — In the first game of a doubleheader, Dimock-Emery beat Platte 16-3 in Sunshine League amateur baseball action Sunday.

Doug Sudbeck went 5-for-5 in the win with one walk, two runs and an RBI to help Dimock-Emery improve to 7-6. Gary Earl added three hits — one of which was a two-run home run — and five RBIs. Jason Schmidt had one hit and three RBIs.

Matt Luckey picked up the win after pitching seven innings. He gave up three runs on eight hits, walked one and struck out four.

Audie Kuiper took the loss and went all seven innings for Platte.

Keith Cutler had two doubles and an RBI for Platte.

Dimock-Emery 9, Platte 2

PLATTE — Dimock-Emery beat Platte 9-2 in the second game of a doubleheader in Sunshine League baseball action Sunday.

Jason Schmidt hit two home runs as Dimock-Emery improved to 8-6 and 4-1 in the Sunshine League.

Schmidt hit a solo home run and a two-run homer for three RBIs. Schmidt now has six home runs on the year. He also pitched the ninth inning and struck out a batter.

Also at the plate, Jeremy PIschke had a solo home run and finished with two hits.

Thomas Pickett took the win after he pitched eight innings, gave up two runs on nine hits, walked one and struck out eight.

Casey Hegge took the loss for Platte and he pitched seven innings. Hegge also had a double and two singles.

Dimock-Emery plays at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Emery against Chamberlain.

Canova 4, Lennox 0

CANOVA — Thomas Gulledge tied a state record with 25 strikeouts in Canova’s 4-0 amateur baseball win over Lennox Sunday.

Gulledge allowed one hit to the second batter of the game. Gulledge holds the record with two other people.

Canova improves to 5-2 overall and 4-2 in the Cornbelt Conference.

Garrett Gassman went 3-for-4 with three RBIs as he had a solo home run and two RBI singles. Trevor Oswald added a solo home run and a single and Nick Koepsell had two singles.

Canova plays at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Flandreau.

Plankinton 10, Huron 6

PLANKINTON — Plankinton beat Huron 10-6 Sunday in a Pony Hills League amateur baseball game.

Plankinton is now 4-5 on the year and 2-1 in the Pony Hills League.

Josh Geppert had the complete game win for Plankinton with 10 strikeouts.

Travis Gant went 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored for Plankinton, Preston Kristensen went 3-for-5 and Matt Buschbach had three RBIs.

Plankinton plays at 8 p.m. Thursday in Miller.

Wynot (Neb.) 12, Tabor 1

TABOR — Tabor committed five errors and had five hits in a 12-1 loss to Wynot (Neb.) in an amateur baseball game Sunday.

The loss is Tabor’s first of the year and it is now 4-1.

Jon Vavruska took the loss for Tabor and Tyler Elder had two hits.

Tabor plays Friday at home against Crofton.
