A new program, Kids Community Garden, is sponsored by the Mitchell Parks and Recreation Department and the Mitchell Garden Club.

The program is open to children in fourth through sixth grades and they will grow a garden of vegetables and flowers.

Darlene Hicks-Pierson will coordinate the group, as they plant a garden at Mitchell Community Gardens and help the participants prepare the soil, plant, water and care for the garden throughout the summer. They will also create a corn maze and build bean pole tents.

The program is scheduled from June 2 through July 14 on Thursdays from 9 to 11 a.m. After July 14, the gardeners will sign up for times to weed and water the garden and all children’s families will share the produce from the garden when it is harvested.

Fee for the program is $15 and scholarships are available.
