RAPID CITY (AP) — More rock is being blasted away at the Crazy Horse Memorial in western South Dakota.

Tuesday's 700-ton blast was to mark the anniversary of sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski's 1947 arrival in the Black Hills to begin carving the likeness of Oglala Lakota warrior Crazy Horse out of a mountain.

State lawmakers in 1983 designated May 3 as “Korczak Day” to honor the sculptor, who had died the previous year. Ziolkowski's family has carried on his work.
