Yankton School opt-out vote first to use state system
South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant says the Yankton School District election on property taxes will be the first local election to use the state's reporting system.
PIERRE (AP) — South Dakota Secretary of State Jason Gant says the Yankton School District election on property taxes will be the first local election to use the state's reporting system.
Voters in the Yankton School District will decide on May 24th whether to accept the school board's recent decision to opt out of the state's limits on property taxes.
Gant says essentially the same balloting and vote-counting systems are used in statewide and local elections, so it makes sense to use the state election reporting system for local elections. He says that means voters will be able to use the Internet see a sample ballot and find voting locations.
People also will be able to see up-to-date vote totals as votes are counted election night.
