Why guys talk about the weather

Men talk about the weather because it serves as a flotation device any time a man’s floundering for something to say. Talking about the weather fills conversational voids.

Men talk about the weather because it serves as a flotation device any time a man’s floundering for something to say. Talking about the weather fills conversational voids.

When two men have nothing in common they can always rely on one back-up topic that any guy can comment on. Weather covers a multitude of differences between guys because all men can relate to this topic. Many a quiet man has overcome awkward moments by mentioning the weather.

Weather is “home base,” like a neutral topic-of-conversation-zone for men. When put in an uncomfortable position where a guy feels pressured to say something, weather has always been the go-to topic of small talk. It spares every man from struggling to participate in other areas of conversation they don’t know much about or struggle to comprehend, such as women.

No matter what kind of weather journey a man’s on, every male is capable of analyzing the weather: past, present, and the unbelievable weather stories he’s heard about. All men are capable of digging up something weather-related to contribute to a conversation. Precipitation amounts and wind directions are seemingly favored among men because many take great joy in bringing them up.

Weather-related small talk oftentimes dictates what else two outwardly opposite men might have in common. Once guys establish an opinion about the recent weather conditions, it oftentimes spurs new discussions. The subject of weather is a universal topic and mentioning it in conversation leads to experiences or stories about it.

Men can find out a lot about each other by how the weather affects them. No matter how little two guys know about each other, both can go on for several hours exchanging tales or useless information about the weather in their lives until a familiar town or mutual friend’s name is mentioned.

Men can quickly assess an acquaintance’s roots, personality, work, and interests by the weather conversations and experiences a guy’s had. Conversations generally start out discussing what the weather’s been like recently.

Eventually it’ll move on to experiences with weather because every man’s had runins with it. No man has ever forgotten how the weather put a damper on an elk hunt, fishing trip, camping trip, or made planting, harvesting, calving, or haying miserable. They’ll discuss what the weather’s like where they come from, what kind of weather they’re wary of and how they’ve dealt with it in the past.

The weather is a big subject to cover but one that every man knows something about and most have years of experience talking about it as well. The four seasons, the warnings versus watches, hordes of different weather conditions and their varied forms, the different regions, weather stories, and of course the forecasts can all be talked about. Regardless of the level of experience with weather, every man has had to deal with it to some degree at one time or another.

Weather has always been there for man: through beautiful and devastating, rainy and dry, nasty and calm. Men rely on the weather because it enables them to talk up a storm in any situation.
