ABERDEEN — The Mitchell gymnastics team had six individuals qualify for the state tournament at the Regional 3AA meet Friday.
Mitchell’s Rebecca Sadler was the region’s all-around champion with a score of 35.475, while the Kernels won the team region title with a score of 138.325.
“I am very excited about Rebecca Sadler, who only has done the all-around a couple of meets for me,” Mitchell coach Audra Rew said. “She put together four very solid performances and I’m excited she’s upped her difficulties and won the region meet.”
The top nine places in each individual event advance to the state tournament, along with the top five in the all-around. Any scores at or above 33 in the all-around advance to the state tournament as well.
Mitchell’s Emily Paulson took second in the all-around with a 35.225 and Nicole Wittstruck was fourth at 33.050.
Sadler took first in the uneven bars (9.025), second on the balance beam (9.125), sixth on the floor (8.6) and sixth on the vault (8.725).
Paulson won the floor (9.15) and the balance beam (9.225) and finished second in the uneven bars (8.45).
“Emily Paulson has been strong on beam and floor for us,” Rew said. “She was able to put up some great scores.”
Mitchell’s Wittstruck tied for ninth with teammate Quinci Herll at 7.9 on the uneven bars. Wittstruck took seventh on the beam (8.175) and fifth on the floor (8.625).
“She has not qualified for an all-around before, but she put together a nice, solid meet for us,” Rew said.
Mitchell’s Bailey Eidahl qualified for state in the vault and the beam, while Ellie Rew qualified in the uneven bars and the beam. Herll also qualified on the floor, taking second Friday.
“She has only competed on varsity floor for me one time,” Audra Rew said. “She added some things to her floor routine. It was unexpected and I was thrilled for her.
“Ellie Rew also had a great bar routine.”
Huron took second as a team in the event and also qualified for the state tournament. Aberdeen was third.
The state tournament starts Friday in Watertown in the team portion of the two-day event. The individual portion is Saturday.
