AREA BASKETBALL ROUNDUP: Warkenthien scores 39 points to lead Woonsocket boys to overtime win

WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket’s Eric Warkenthien had 39 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Woonsocket High School boys’ basketball team to a 78-67 overtime win over Kimball on Friday night.

WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket’s Eric Warkenthien had 39 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Woonsocket High School boys’ basketball team to a 78-67 overtime win over Kimball on Friday night.

Warkenthien scored 10 of Woonsocket’s 14 points in overtime to clinch the victory.

Justin Davis had 15 points and Jaedyn Ford chipped in 10 for the Redmen, who are 6-7 and play Wolsey-Wessington today in Wolsey.

Jesse Taylor scored 20 points and Holden Surat added 19 for Kimball. Trevor Reinesch and Ben Ashley each scored 10 points for the Kiotes, who are 3-9 and are at White Lake on Monday.

Reinesch also had 10 rebounds for Kimball.

Bridgewater-Emery 54, Canistota 43

MENNO — Darin Bartscher had 15 points and eight rebounds to lead Bridgewater-Emery past Canistota 54-43 on the second day of the Cornbelt Conference Tournament on Friday night.

Tyson Kayser had 14 points, eight rebounds, four steals and three blocks for B-E. Terry Weber chipped in 11 points and seven rebounds for B-E, which is 8-3 and continues play in the tournament today against Hanson.

Sam Jolly had 15 points and Trevor Schroeder had 13 rebounds to lead Canistota, which is 10-2 and plays Marion today.

Marion 55, Freeman 51

MENNO — Marion held off Freeman for a 55-51 win Friday in the Cornbelt Conference Tournament.

Phil Luke led Marion with 20 points, Shayne Becker scored 12 points and Braden Schmidt grabbed 10 rebounds for Marion (8-4).

Trey Waltner had a big game for Freeman (1-10) with 22 points. Cole Paulson had 13 points and five assists and Caleb Lang grabbed 11 rebounds for the Flyers.

Both teams play today on the final day of the tournament with Marion facing Canistota at 4 p.m. and Freeman taking on Menno at 1 p.m.

Hanson 62, Menno 34

MENNO — Hanson’s defense helped the Beavers to a 62-34 win against Menno Friday in the Cornbelt Conference tournament.

Hanson (7-5) held Menno (2-12) to 32 percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers.

Hanson shot 43 percent and was led by Pierce Smith’s 23 points and six rebounds. Jacob Bartscher followed with 12 points and Trey Persson scored 11 points for the Beavers.

David Schelske had a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds for Menno and Dylan Lehr also scored 10 points.

Both teams play today in the final day of the tournament with Hanson taking on Bridgewater-Emery at 2:30 p.m. and Menno facing Freeman at 1 p.m.

Howard 55, Sanborn Central 53

FORESTBURG — Cody Torkelson scored 12 points and had 10 rebounds to help Howard come from behind to beat Sanborn Central 55-53 on Friday night.

James Schwader had 14 points and Levi Hattervig added 10 points for Howard, which trailed by three after three quarters.

Michael Dawson had 10 rebounds for Howard, which is 2-12 and is at Baltic on Monday.

Nick Miller had 18 points and 16 rebounds to lead Sanborn Central. Chase Weeden and Todd Stekl each scored 15 points for the Rebels, who are 2-12 and are at Lake Preston today.

Tripp-Delmont/Armour 84, Marty 30

TRIPP — Tyler Payer led all scorers with 23 points as Tripp-Delmont/Armour beat Marty 84-30 on Friday night.

Adam Fink had 21 points, six assists anf five rebounds and Jared Hermanek added 15 points for TDA, which is 12-2 and hosts Mount Vernon on Tuesday in Tripp.

Christian Hart had 16 points to lead Marty, which is 4-10.

McCook Central/Montrose 47, Garretson 33

MONTROSE — Third-ranked McCook Central/Montrose pulled away from Garretson in the second half for a 47-33 win Friday.

McCook Central/Montrose (13-0) led Big East Conference rival Garretson (6-8) 11-9 after the first quarter, but outscored the Blue Dragons 17-4 in the second quarter.

Jay Huls led MC/M with 17 points and Shayne Gottlob had 10 points and five rebounds.

Garretson was led by Sawyer Gibson, who scored 11 points.

McCook Central/Montrose plays today at Wagner.

Gregory 56, Parkston 40

GREGORY — Aaron Schmitz’s big game led Gregory past Parkston 56-40 Friday.

Schmitz scored 23 points and had six steals for Gregory (8-2). Nate Schmitz added 12 points and Shane Wernke scored 10 points for the Gorillas.

Evan Schoenfelder had a double-double in the loss with 11 points and 14 rebounds and Parker Van Zee scored 11 points for Parkston (1-11).

Gregory plays today at Chamberlain and Parkston hosts Scotland Monday.

Wagner 76, Andes Central 42

LAKE ANDES — Wagner got 63 shots off in its 76-42 win against Andes Central Friday.

Wagner (11-2) shot 46 percent and got a double-double from Brett Kuca, with 21 points and 13 rebounds, and Solomon St. Pierre, with 18 points and 10 assists. Noah St. Pierre scored 15 points, Brennen Hilzendeger added 12 points and Trent Greger grabbed 11 rebounds for the Red Raiders.

Wagner outrebounded Andes Central (2-11) 34-22 and held the Eagles to 30 percent shooting.

Gabe Cournoyer led Andes Central with 13 points and seven rebounds and Grant Petrik had 10 points and seven rebounds.

TYNDALL — Avon’s late comeback helped the Pirates beat Bon Homme 39-36.

Avon (7-7) led 25-23 at halftime before Bon Homme (8-6) took a 29-28 third quarter lead.

Luke VanGerpen led Avon with 13 points and Josh Cihak had nine rebounds.

Bon Homme was led by Ryan Heusinkveld’s 13 points and nine rebounds.

Avon plays against Alcester-Hudson on Thursday in Alcester and Bon Homme plays Corsica/Stickney Monday in Corsica.

WINNER — Winner had two players with double-doubles in a 48-32 win against Ainsworth (NE) Friday.

Both Zach Horstman and Kyle Mathis scored 11 points and had 10 rebounds for Winner (12-2).

Ben Hunt led Ainsworth (14-5) with 11 points.

Winner plays Tuesday at home against St. Francis.

WHITE LAKE — Ethan shot 52 percent in its 68-36 win against White Lake Friday.

Jordon Connor led Ethan (6-6) with 20 points and eight rebounds. Anthony Huber scored 15 points and Kyle Pollreisz chipped in 10 points.

Ethan held White Lake (3-8) to 30 percent shooting.

White Lake got 13 points from Brandon Hanten and Caleb Kirsch grabbed 10 rebounds.

Ethan hosts Marion on Tuesday and White Lake plays today at Wessington Springs.

Freeman Academy 21

HURLEY — Ninth-ranked Viborg/Hurley held Freeman Academy to three second half points in its 74-21 win Friday.

Cory Jacobsen led Viborg/Hurley (10-3) with 17 points and Trevor Jacobsen scored 11 points. Dennis DeNeui and Tyler Gerdes both had six assists for the Cougars, who shot 50 percent.

Viborg/Hurley held Freeman Academy to 24 percent shooting and the win clinched the Tri-Valley Conference for the Vikings.

Freeman Academy was led by Clint Basselman’s seven points.

Freeman Academy plays Monday at home against Flandreau Indian School and Viborg/Hurley hosts West Lyon (IA) today.

GREGORY — Third-ranked Parkston had three players score in double-figures in its 66-51 win against Gregory Friday.

Jenna Reiser led Parkston (13-1) with 18 points and six rebounds, Logan Wagner scored 17 points and Marie Malloy had 14 points and five rebounds.

Gregory was led by Tanya Talsma’s 17 points. Baili McCance grabbed 13 rebounds for the Gorillas. Both Paxten Johnson and Shelby Rajewich scored nine points and Johnson had four assists for Gregory.

Both teams play Monday with Parkston hosting Scotland and Gregory traveling to Wagner.

MILLER — Highmore-Harrold got 17 points from Holly Hamlin as it beat Sunshine Bible Academy 55-32 on Friday night.

Courtney Keller had 11 points and Logan Cowan added 10 for H-H, which is 14-1 and hosts Wall today in Highmore.

Shanna Moreland had 10 points and nine rebounds to lead SBA, which is 6-9 and is at Mitchell Christian on Monday.

Dominque Diaz had 12 points and seven rebounds for Marty.

Galbraith scored 20 points, grabbed 13 rebounds had four steals and two blocks for Winner (12-4) and Kirby Bertram added 11 points. Carlie Thieman scored seven points and had six assists for the Warriors.

Shania Nilson led Ainsworth with six points.

Winner plays Monday at Cheyenne-Eagle Butte in Eagle Butte.

WOONSOCKET — Woonsocket jumped out to a quick lead against Kimball in its 55-34 win Friday.

Emily Olson had a double-double for Woonsocket (9-4) with 15 points and 10 rebounds and Kayla Collins scored 15 points, grabbed seven rebounds, dished out five assists and had five steals.

Rachel Gaulke led Kimball (2-11) with 12 points, seven rebounds and six steals and Jill Jandreau scored 11 points.

Woonsocket plays Wolsey-Wessington today in Wolsey and Kimball hosts White Lake on Tuesday.

WHITE LAKE — White Lake held Ethan to 10 second half points in a 51-41 win Friday.

White Lake (8-5) trailed 31-29 at halftime, but outscored Ethan (0-12) 22-10 in the second half.

Hailey Mohnen led White Lake with 17 points. Both Emily Beckmann and Maria Nightingale scored 14 points and Nightingale grabbed five rebounds and Ali Haines had seven assists for the Wolverines.

Shelly Tilberg and Darbi Gustafson both scored 10 points for Ethan.

White Lake plays Monday at Kimball and Ethan plays today at Avon.
