BRANDON — The Mitchell High School girls’ basketball team lost to Brandon Valley 46-36 Thursday in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game.

The Kernels had a six-point lead after the first quarter, but scored only four second-quarter points. It was Mitchell’s eighth loss of the year.

“We got off to a good start in the first quarter,” Mitchell coach Wes Morgan said. “We were up 11 to 5 in the first quarter, and then all of a sudden we were down 22-15 going into halftime.

“We just didn’t handle their pressure in the second quarter and we didn’t execute our plays. They just took us out of what we were trying to do.”

Mitchell got a team-high 15 points from Kerri Young. Kristin Sabers had nine points and eight rebounds. Macy Miller had eight points and no other Mitchell scorer had more than two points.

“We couldn’t put the ball in the basket,” Morgan said. “We were 0 for 9 from the perimeter. They were just more aggressive and they out-worked us.”

Mitchell (6-8, 5-4 ESD) travels to Pierre Tuesday and then plays four straight games at home.
