Sister Hermine Haiar, Milwaukee

Sister Hermine Haiar, 97, Milwaukee, died Monday, Jan. 17, 2011, at Convent of St. Francis of Assisi, Milwaukee.

Funeral services were Jan. 21, 2011, at St. Francis Chapel, Milwaukee. Burial was in Holy Sepulcher Cemetery, Milwaukee.

She was born Armella Haiar on Nov. 6, 1913, in Farmer to Herman and Anna (Steilen) Haiar.

She entered the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi in August 1934 and made her profession of vows on Aug. 12, 1937.

After professing her vows, she was a homemaker and organist in New Berlin, Wis., until 1942.

She then taught primary grades in West Brooklyn, Ill., from 1942 to 1945 and was in charge of the kindergarten in St. Joseph Orphanage, Superior, Wis., from 1945 to 1947.

She then taught primary grades in Lyons, Wis., from 1947 to 1956 and in Virgil, Ill., from 1956 to 1958.

From 1958 to 1972, she was a group mother at the orphanage in Superior, as well as at St. Aemilian Orphanage, Milwaukee; St. Joseph Orphanage, Torrington, Wyo.; and at St. Coletta School/Alverno Cottage, Jefferson, Wis.

She was a driver/hostess at the motherhouse until she assumed care of the guest house there in 1984. She retired from active ministry in 1991.

She is survived by two brothers: Jerome Haiar and wife Stella; and Lawrence Haiar and wife Lavonne; two sister: Mildred Seiver and Adelade Krebsbach and husband Carl; a sister-in-law, Mary Haiar; and the Sisters of St. Francis of Assisi.

She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and five sisters.
