Van Laecken leads MCHS girls to win over Canistota

CANISTOTA — Alexa Van Laecken scored 17 points and had eight rebounds, four assists and three steals to lead the Mitchell Christian High School girls’ basketball team to a 57-41 win over Canistota on Monday night.

The game was tied at 12 after one quarter, but MCHS outscored Canistota 13-4 in the second period to take control.

“Our girls just kind of settled in and started playing their game,” MCHS coach Jackie Van Laecken said. “We needed this win.”

The Eagles, who improved to 11-2 on the season, had lost two of their past three games entering Monday.

Mackenzie Van Laecken had 11 points and seven rebounds for MCHS, which is at Ethan on Thursday.

Mariah Nelson and Becca Glanzer each chipped in nine points for the Eagles.

Chloe Nielsen had 17 points and Haley Jerman added nine for Canistota, which is 3-8 and plays Marion in a tournament in Menno on Thursday.
