The Mitchell High School wrestling team had six wrestlers make the finals of their weight class at the Winner Invitational wrestling tournament Saturday.

Alex Herrick (103), Jason Greenway (152) and Brent Havlik (160) each came away with individual championships, while Lakin Neugebauer (112), Landon Neugebauer (130) and Justin Greenway (171) each took second to lead the Kernels to a second-place team finish.

Mitchell scored 204 team points to finish second to Redfield/Doland in the 12-team event. The strong day led to some late-season confidence for the Kernels.

“It started off on Friday night and the kids really wrestled as a team,” Mitchell coach Travis Carpenter said. “They did the type of things they needed to do to win a dual. It was a good weekend for us in the aspect that it seemed like we came together a little bit.”

Herrick, a freshman, went 4-0 on the weekend with four pins. He beat Lennox’s Mathew Mazourek in the semifinals and Bon Homme’s Duncan Stoebner in the finals.

Herrick has won eight matches in a row.

“It was my first-ever time on varsity getting first place at a tournament, so that was very exciting for me,” Herrick said. “I’m going to use it as motivation, pretty much. Now, I’m not going to be as nervous like I used to be.

“Now I feel like I have a pretty good chance at winning a lot of these tournaments.”

Jason Greenway, a junior, won the 152-pound weight class by beating Bon Homme’s Blase Vanecek by way of a 6-3 decision in the finals.

Havlik, a junior, beat Winner’s Tate Novotny by a 3-0 decision in the finals for his title.

“We placed 12 kids, had six kids in the finals and three champions, it was good to see for sure,” Carpenter said. “It’s great for our confidence going into this next weekend against Brandon and in the Brookings tournament.”

Other placers for Mitchell included Dylon Bollock, who took sixth at 119, Matt Larson (fourth at 125), Tanner Henkel (sixth at 135), Ryan Buck (third at 145), Cole Johnson (fourth at 189) and Tyson Sprinkle (fourth at 215).

“I thought Landon Neugebauer wrestled a really nice tournament, Jason Greenway had a nice tournament with a couple pins and a major decision and Ryan Buck is wrestling really well right now as well,” Carpenter said. “We had a lot of guys wrestle well.”

The Kernels are at Brandon Valley on Friday and compete in the South Dakota duals tournament in Brookings on Saturday.

Mitchell then hosts Huron on Feb. 3 and travel to Pierre on Feb. 4, before it finishes the regular season at the Eastern South Dakota Conference meet in Brookings on Feb. 12.

“We were happy about how we wrestled as a team this weekend, but we know we could do better,” Herrick said. “We’re still trying to improve as a team.”
