Mitchell Christian boys' basketball team beats Irene-Wakonda

The Mitchell Christian boys’ basketball team put together its most complete game this season as the Eagles defeated Irene-Wakonda 64-35 Saturday at Mitchell Christian School.

“This is by far the best we have played at both ends of the floor,” Mitchell Christian coach Tom Young said. “We took care of the basketball against their pressure, which we practiced the last couple of days, and we shot the ball well.”

It wasn’t just the team that had its best game, but also senior point guard Christ Christopher, who scored a career-best 20 points.

“Christ really played the best game of his high school career, and I have to give him a lot of credit,” Young said. “The kids did well, but Christ especially, along with freshman Wes Vander Pol.”

It wasn’t just Christopher’s idea to put up that many points, either. He said Young told him to look for his own shot a bit more.

“Coach just told me to shoot more often, so I guess that’s what I did,” Christopher said. “Coach gave me a lot of confidence during practice, so I just looked to shoot. That’s kind of how it went down, and everything worked out well.”

Christopher couldn’t get too far from his passing ways since he still led the team in assists with six.

Mitchell Christian plays Tuesday at home against Corsica/Stickney.
