SIOUX CENTER, Iowa — The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team turned the ball over 21 times Wednesday night.
But that was not their biggest issue.
The Tigers shot just 29 percent from the floor for the game and fell 66-56 at the hands of Dordt College (Iowa) in Great Plains Athletic Conference play at the DeWitt Gymnasium.
“We just did not get the ball in the hoop very well,” DWU coach Shane Murphy said. “We lacked in a lot of areas on the offensive side of the ball and we turned the ball over too much.”
Even with the turnovers and offensive ineptitude, the Tigers (14-6 overall, 4-5 GPAC) led by five with 9 minutes to play.
That’s when Dordt began its decisive spurt.
The Defenders (10-7, 3-4) broke off a 22-4 run over the next seven minutes to put the game on ice.
DWU was led by Brady Wiebe, who posted 16 points and 15 rebounds. Wiebe made just 4-of-19 shots. Justin Nelson had 10 points for the Tigers, who played without senior guard Larry Swan because he was suspended as a result of his ejection from Saturday’s game against Doane College in Crete, Neb.
“(Dordt) didn’t to anything different from what we’ve seen defensively (against Wiebe),” Murphy said. “They’ve got good size.”
Trevor Wolterstorff had 21 points to pace Dordt, which led by seven at halftime.
The Tigers were 18-of-62 shooting in the game, including 6-of-23 from the 3-point line.
DWU hosts Concordia at 4 p.m. Sunday at the Corn Palace.
