Mitchell native Brooke Cersosimo was named the Verizon Western Athletic Conference Gymnast of the Week for the week of Jan. 3 to Jan. 9.
Cersosimo, a junior on the Southern Utah University gymnastics team, tied for the all-around title in a dual meet against Utah State in her collegiate debut.
She scored a 38.875 in the all-around competition by leading the team on vault with a 9.775 and finishing second on the team on balance beam with a 9.750. Cersosimo also tallied career highs on the uneven parallel bars (9.650) and floor routine (9.700) at the event.
Southern Utah was picked to finish second to Boise State in the WAC this season. The Thunderbirds host UCLA in a dual on Friday in Cedar City, Utah.
Jordan Miller had a team-high 20 points and seven rebounds for the Southwest Minnesota State University men’s basketball team in a 84-76 loss to Minnesota State-Mankato in Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference play Saturday in Mankato.
Miller, a Mitchell native, was 5-of-10 from the floor and hit three 3-pointers and was 7-of-8 from the free-throw line. He also had three assists in 26 minutes of action.
Miller leads his team in scoring with 15.7 points per game and also averages five assists a game.
He has hit better than 94 percent (54-of-57) from the free-throw line so far this season.
The Mustangs (6-7 overall, 3-6 NSIC) are at the University of Mary on Friday in Bismarck, N.D. Miller and company also will play Northern State University in Aberdeen at 8 p.m. Saturday.
Amelia Ladd, a sophomore on the Luther College (Iowa) swimming and diving team, was part of a 400-medley relay team that set a pool record at a meet Saturday.
Ladd teamed with Erin Mykleby, Stephanie Drewes and Addison Choi to finish in a time of 4 minutes, 11.07 seconds, the best time ever posted in the event at the Regents Center Pool in Decorah, Iowa.
The old mark of 4:14.27 was set by the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in 2009.
Ladd is a freestyle specialist for Luther. She was named the teams Most Improved Swimmer following the 2009-10 season and has helped set school records in the 200 and 400 medley relays.
Luther is at the Grinnell Invitational on Jan. 21 and 22 in Grinnell, Iowa.
