Catching Up: A Look at Former Area Athletes

South Central graduate Chelsa Baxa led the University of Sioux Falls women’s basketball team with 17 points in a win over Presentation on Thursday in Aberdeen.

Baxa, a 5-foot-8 senior guard, led five double-digit scorers for the No. 4-ranked Cougars in the 108-64 victory.

Baxa also scored nine points in a 78-62 victory over Mayville State (N.D.) on Saturday.

The Cougars are back in action when they travel to La Crosse, Wis., to face Viterbo University on Dec. 29.

Mitchell native Cody Horton, a sophomore on the University of South Dakota men’s swimming and diving team, was part of a relay that took second place in a dual against Morningside College on Dec. 9 at the DakotaDome.

Horton, a freestyle specialist, swam the third leg of the 200- meter freestyle relay for the Coyotes, who won the dual 125-85.

Horton also competed in the 200 medley relay, the 200 freestyle and the 100 butterfly at the event.

The USD men’s swimming and diving team is back in action when it travels to Mankato, Minn., for a dual Jan. 15.

Parkston native Matt Malloy scored a team-high 22 points and had five rebounds for the University of Sioux Falls men’s basketball team in the Cougars’ 82-64 win over School of Mines on Friday.

Malloy was 6-of-13 shooting and hit 10 of 11 from the free-throw line in 36 minutes of action. USF is ranked No. 22 in the nation.

Fellow Parkston native David Maxwell had four points and six rebounds for the Cougars, who are 8-4 and are at La Crosse, Wis., to face Viterbo University on Dec. 29.
