HURON, S.D. (AP) — A small-town school superintendent has pleaded guilty to drunk driving.

KOKK radio reports that Wessington Springs School Superintendent Lance Witte did not appear in court in Huron but made the plea through his attorney.

His sentence of 30 days of jail time has been suspended, and Witte must pay a $700 fine. Witte's driver's license was revoked, but he will be issued a work permit.

Witte's blood alcohol content would require him to take part in the 24/7 sobriety program, but Circuit Judge Jon Erickson waived the requirement because Beadle County's alcohol monitoring bracelets are all in use.

Wessington Springs School Board President Pat Fastnacht says Witte is extremely regretful for the incident and thankful no one was hurt.

Fastnacht says Witte has performed exceptionally well as superintendent.
