Matt Malloy, David Maxwell and Skyler Bloch each had a large hand in the University of Sioux Falls Great Plains Athletic Conference season-opening win Saturday.
The Cougars defeated Hastings College 89-83 and got 21 points from both Malloy and Bloch.
Maxwell had 17 points in the win.
Malloy, a Parkston native, is averaging a team-high 17.3 points per game through four games this season. Maxwell, also from Parkston, is averaging 11 points and five rebounds per game.
Bloch, a Scotland graduate, is averaging 11.8 points and 4.3 rebounds per game.
n The South Dakota State women’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season on Thursday. The Jacks fell to Purdue 73-40, but Mitchell-native Jill Young chipped in 12 points.
Young, a Mitchell Christian graduate, has started all three games for the Jacks this season and is averaging 13.3 points per game. She was also the only Jackrabbit named to the women’s preseason NIT all-tournament team, announced Tuesday.
McCook Central graduate Kristin Rotert — who became the 29th member of the SDSU women’s basketball 1,000-point club last year — also has started all three games for the Jacks and is averaging 7.7 points per game.
SDSU plays at 7 tonight against Illinois State at Frost Arena in Brookings.
n Jordan Miller, a Mitchell native, had 14 points, three rebounds and five assists in Southwest Minnesota State University’s 87-65 win over Minnesota-Morris Saturday. He also had 19 points in a 94-80 loss to South Dakota State Thursday.
Miller and the Mustangs play Northwest Missouri State Saturday in Marshall, Minn.
n Hanson graduate Megan Doyle is averaging 17.7 points and six rebounds per game for Augustana College this season.
Doyle has started all three games for the Vikings, who are 3-0. She had a season-high 20 points in Auggie’s 93-57 win over Gustavus Adolphus Saturday. She also had seven assists and seven rebounds in the game.
