DWU Briefs: Bellet ties for 6th at Stars Fall Classic

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golfer Dani Bellet carded a 72 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth place at the OCU Stars Fall Classic, an event hosted by Oklahoma City University.

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — Dakota Wesleyan University women’s golfer Dani Bellet carded a 72 on Tuesday to finish in a tie for sixth place at the OCU Stars Fall Classic, an event hosted by Oklahoma City University.

Bellet was in 21st place individually after Monday’s first-round play, but took nine strokes off her score to lead the Tigers to an eighth-place team finish. DWU had a team score of 676 — 343 on Monday and 333 on Tuesday — over the two-day event.

Freshman Kamie Roesler shot a 167 and finished in 33rd, Molly Webster was 39th with a 175, Samantha Mogck tied for 44th and Chelsea Burback tied for 48th for DWU, which completed its fall season Tuesday.

Tigers swept by No. 4 Northwestern

The Dakota Wesleyan University volleyball team put up a strong fight in the second set, but couldn’t outlast undefeated Northwestern College (Iowa), eventually falling 25-15, 26-24, 25-12 in a Great Plains Athletic Conference match Tuesday at Fosness Arena.

No. 4-ranked Northwestern improves to 26-0 on the season, including a 10-0 mark in the conference, while DWU drops to 8-16, 3-7 in the GPAC.

Northwestern was led by Jennifer Jansen’s 10 kills. Kaitlin Beaver had four aces and Rylee Hulstein finished with 14 digs.

Dakota Wesleyan’s Ashley Kley had nine kills and 14 digs. Andrea Johnson had seven kills and Meghan Cronberg added six while Carina Fesenmaier piled up 22 assists. The Tigers play at Hastings College (Neb.) on Friday.

DWU men fourth, women 10th in poll

The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team received one first-place vote and was picked fourth in the Great Plains Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll, released Tuesday.

Despite losing All-American Preston Broughton, point guard Mitch Bain and conference player of the year Darrin Dorsey, the Tigers tallied 91 points and fell one short of tying Northwestern College for third.

Under new coach Shane Murphy, the Tigers will turn to seniors Brady Wiebe and Chase Walder, Wiebe is a two-time All-American and Walder earned all-conference, honorable-mention honors last season.

The Tigers open their season with the DWU Classic at home on Oct. 29-30.

The University of Sioux Falls was tabbed to win the conference, getting 10 first-place votes and 120 points.

The DWU women were picked 10th out of 12 teams, getting 23 points. The Tigers, led by new coach Jason Christensen, have 14 players on the roster, only three of which are seniors and juniors.

Defending national champion Northwestern was picked first, receiving 11 first-place votes.

The Tigers start their season on the road at Dakota State on Nov. 2.
