Louis Mitchell, 82, Wood, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at his daughter’s home in Winner, of cancer.
Louis Mitchell, 82, Wood, died Tuesday, Sept. 28, 2010, at his daughter’s home in Winner, of cancer.
Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Wood Community Hall, Wood. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Wood. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday at Our Lady of Good Hope Catholic Hall, Wood.
Arrangements are under the direction of Mason Funeral Home, Winner.
He was born on June 19, 1928, at the family home northeast of Wood to Elmo and Katherine (Krieger) Mitchell.
He attended country school for three years before the family moved into Wood. He attended Wood School through the seventh grade.
He went to work at an early age due to the death of his father.
He worked for Wendell Dimond for eight years before moving to Idaho, where he worked on a potato farm for a year before being called to duty with the U.S. Army in 1950.
He served two years and received an honorable discharge from the Korean War.
He returned to Wood and began working for the Lookabills, where he remained for 17 years.
On Sept. 24, 1957, he married Emma Jackson Joseph.
He then began working for Mellette County Highway Department, where he remained for 21 years until his retirement.
He was a lifetime member of American Legion, (more than 51 years); a member of Our Lady of Good Council Church; Wood Town Board and served as a foster parent for 19 years.
He is survived by his wife, three daughters: Sharon Koening and husband Harold, Martin; Donna Brandis and husband Toby, White River; and Anne Bolton and husband Wayne, Winner; three stepsons: Albert Joseph Jr., Mission; Frank Joseph and wife Karen, Aberdeen; and Paul Joseph and wife Whitney, Wood; 19 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, three brothers-in-law: Anton Lebeda, Nick Jackson and wife Pauline; and Willis Dickson; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a great-granddaughter, his parents, three sisters: Esther, Louise and Margaret; three brothers: John, Charles; and William; a stepdaughter, Barbara Shelton and husband Kerry; a stepson, Roger Joseph; and two stepgrandchildren.
