Luke Hagen/Republic Mitchell’s No. 1 singles player Angie Lorenzen returns a volley in a match against a Vermillion opponent Tuesday at Hitchcock Park. The match, which was a triangular, was the Kernels’ first of the year.

The Mitchell girls’ tennis team swept two matches at Hitchcock Park Tuesday in its first action of the year.

In a triangular, the Kernels defeated Rapid City Central 9-0 and Vermillion 8-1.

“Kudos goes out to everyone in the first match against Rapid City (Central),” Mitchell coach Gayle Klein said. “Many of them got off to a rocky start and they had to change up their games. They were able to do that, and so that was the big positive in the Central match.”

All three of Mitchell’s doubles teams won, including the No. 1 team of Angie Lorenzen and Kendra Cesosimo. They defeated their opponent 10-0, while the No. 2 team of Megan Solberg and Courtney Wells won 10-3. Kayla White and Chelsea Kracht won at No. 3 doubles 10-6.

Against Vermillion, the Kernels took two of three doubles matches and swept the singles.

At No. 1 doubles, Lorenzen and Cersosimo fell 10-7.

Lorenzen was able to take her singles match, however.

“Angie was down (7-2) in singles and came back to win it,” Klein said. “She mixed up the pace, and that’s what got her back in the game.”

The Kernels are back in action Saturday when they travel to the Brookings Jamboree. Their next home match is Friday, Sept. 3 in a triangular when they play Pierre and Yankton.
