Mad Dogs fall in regular-season finale

Harry Decker threw a complete-game shutout to lead the Pierre Rattlers past the Mitchell Mad Dogs 5-0 in a non-league amateur baseball game Sunday night at Cadwell Park. Brett Young took the loss after tossing seven innings and allowing five runs for the Mad Dogs. Josh DeJong and Cade Hearnen each had two hits to lead the Mitchell offense. Billy Hamilton added a triple. The loss marked the end of the regular season for the Mad Dogs, who will be back in action next weekend when they travel to Brookings to play for the right to advance to the Class A state amateur tournament.

Mount Vernon 7,

Dimock/Emery 6 – 14 innings

PARKSTON — Phil Malde had an RBI double in the 14th inning to push a run across and help Mount Vernon defeat Dimock/Emery 7-6 in a 14-inning District 5B semifinal game Sunday.

Chris Dennis started for Mount Vernon. He threw 12 innings and struck out 11. Tyson Paulson threw the final two innings and picked up the win in relief.

Offensively, Geno Kitchens had four singles and Chris Dennis and Cody Larson each doubled.

Matt Luckey was the losing pitcher for Dimock/Emery, while Phil Johnson started and threw 7.2 innings. Johnson struck out nine.

Sam Pischke had a double and a single and Doug Sudbeck and Gary Earl each had two singles.

Mount Vernon plays the Parkston Mudcats at 8 p.m. Friday in Parkston for the District 5B championship.

Parkston Mudcats 10, Platte 2

PARKSTON — Brady Nolz went all nine innings to earn the win as the Mudcats beat Platte 10-2 in a second-round game of the District 5B amateur baseball tournament Sunday.

Trevor Fruedenthal had a double and three singles, Jeremy Sudbeck had a double and a single and Jordan Gau recorded a pair of singles to lead the top-seeded Mudcats.

Rich Sternberg took the loss for Platte.

Miller-Wessington 12,

Chamberlain 5

PIERRE — Cody Cotton picked up the win as Miller-Wessington topped Chamberlain 12-5 in a Pony Hills League amateur baseball tournament game Sunday.

The win earns Miller-Wessington a spot in the state tournament.

Bryce Kreutzfeldt had a double, a single and two runs scored to lead Chamberlain.

Wessington Springs 8, 4 Corners 2

PIERRE — Wessington Springs beat 4 Corners 8-2 in an elimination game at the Pony Hills League amateur baseball tournament Sunday.

Wessington Springs continues play in the loser’s bracket against Plankinton at 7 p.m. tonight in Pierre.

Mount Vernon 16,

Corsica/Stickney 9

PARKSTON — Spencer Sudbeck had a home run and two singles to lead Mount Vernon past Corsica/Stickney 16-9 in a first-round game of the District 5B amateur baseball tournament Saturday.

Cody Larson, Fredy Ellis and Phil Malde each had three hits to lead Mount Vernon’s offense.

Chad Wentland had a grand slam and two singles, while Brad Groenweg and Jimmy DeWaard each had three singles for C/S.
