The Mitchell Mustangs won five games to claim the championship in the “AA” Traveling Minors division of the VFW 12-and-under state baseball tournament over the weekend at the Cadwell Sports Complex.
The Mustangs beat the Sioux Falls Ravens 8-2 in the championship game Sunday afternoon after topping the Sioux Falls Red Sox 4-2 in seven innings in a semifinal earlier in the day.
“We only had about a 25-minute break before the championship game and I was worried about our kids being mentally drained after a very emotional win in the semifinals,” Mustangs coach Craig Mock said. “But we did a great job of coming out and establishing ourselves with three runs right way in the championship to take control.”
The Mustangs also beat the Sioux Falls T-Bones 9-0 on Friday and the Brandon Valley 11’s 8-5 on Saturday morning in pool play.
The Mustangs (33-7), who were awarded the top seed in the division by way of coin flip, then beat the Brookings Heat 8-4 in the first round of seeded games.
Mock said the win over the Heat was a turning point in the weekend.
“We were behind 3-2 going into the fourth inning and put four runs on the board — we just got the leadoff guys on and kept punching them through,” Mock said. “We’re all about our team and we won this championship as a team. Everybody contributed to this win. Whether it be a big defensive play or anything else, each player was able to contribute.”
In the third-place game of the “AA” Traveling Minors division, the Red Sox beat the T-Bones.
In the “AA” Traveling Majors division, the Sioux Falls Titans beat the Sioux Falls Cyclones 5-0 in the championship game. Pierre beat Yankton 7-5 in the third-place game.
In the “A” division, Bon Homme beat Dell Rapids 3-1 to take the championship, while Madison downed Chamberlain 10-0 in the third-place game.
Irene/Wakonda beat Artesian/Letcher 8-7 in the “B” division championship. Ethan beat Chancellor 15-14 in the third-place game.
The Mitchell Thunder, who played as part of the “AA” Traveling Majors division, lost both of their games in the tournament.
