Despite the nonexistence of a Corn Palace Invitational Committee, the annual CPI Golf Tournament in Mitchell will still be held.

This year’s tournament will take place Aug. 12-14 at Wild Oak Golf Club, with the first day being devoted to practice.

“The CPI committee said they weren’t doing anymore, but the tournament will still be held,” said Cody Larson, Wild Oak’s manager. “We’re just organizing it ourselves.”

This year’s tournament, which will be the 40th annual, will be played on the top nine at Wild Oak. A maximum of 52 two-person teams will play the top nine twice to get a full round of golf in.

Wild Oak has suffered flooding problems this year with the large amounts of rainfall and the rising water levels on Firesteel Creek, forcing the course to close several of the holes on the bottom nine.

The CPI committee, which started the annual tournament in 1970, disbanded in December. In recent years, the invitation-only tournament was split, having one day each at Wild Oak and one day at Lakeview Golf Course, Mitchell’s city-owned golf course.

Last weekend, Lakeview had its first-ever member-guest golf tournament, which was set up to replicate the CPI Golf Tournament.

Lakeview club house manager Dan Sabers said he hopes the event becomes a yearly occurrence.
