Mount Vernon VFW beats Armour in first round of I-90 tourney

PARKSTON — The Mount Vernon 15- and-16-year-old VFW baseball team beat Armour, 15-5, in five innings in the first round of the I-90 league’s midseason tournament Wednesday night.
Cam Deinert earned the win for Mount Vernon after throwing three innings and striking out five. He allowed one earned run on three hits.
Deinert also went 3-for-4 at the plate with a pair of doubles and three RBIs. Jake Sonne and Cody London each added two hits and two RBIs for Mount Vernon.
Jared Hermanek went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs for Armour.
Mount Vernon will face Parkston in Mount Vernon at 7 p.m. Friday night in a second-round game of the tournament.
Mount Vernon also picked up a win over Scotland, 24-3, in five innings Tuesday night in Scotland.
Nate Zens picked up the win after allowing one earned run on two hits and striking out five.
Deric Denning went 3-for-3 with a double and three RBIs, while Jake Sonne and Cody London each had two hits and drove in five runs combined for Mount Vernon (12-2).
