Hanson, Avon clash in Week 2 of 2010 football schedule

The Avon football team will get its chance at redemption when it plays Hanson at the Beavers’ new stadium in the second week of the regular season this fall.

That is one of the highlighted area matchups on the high school football schedule for the year. The football schedules were recently posted on the South Dakota High School Association’s website.

In the 2009 state 9A championship game, Avon fell to Hanson, 20-16, losing its perfect season.

“It’s developed into a pretty good rivalry over the last few years,” Beavers’ coach Jim Haskamp said. “This might be the sixth straight season we’ve had them on our schedule. They’ve had some graduation losses, but they have a lot of kids coming back, too.”

Hanson, which has won two straight state championships, opens its title defense in Marion — which will not be co-oped with Hurley this year — Aug. 27 and hosts Avon in Alexandria Sept. 3.

Hanson’s game against Avon will be the first game played at the Beavers’ new stadium that will have a larger grandstand and press box.

“I think it will be exciting for our kids to play on the new field,” Haskamp said. “I think it was something we needed, and it’s going to be great for our fans. There are a lot of people who did sit in their cars, and this will give a lot of people a better view to watch the game.”

On Sept. 24, the Beavers also host Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan, a new co-op that was formed when Bridgewater and Emery consolidated schools effective this school year.

Hanson hosts the defending state 9AA champions, Howard, Oct. 8 before finishing its season in Mount Vernon.

Last year, the Beavers lost to Howard in double overtime during the regular season and defeated Mount Vernon in the first round of the playoffs.

“Up and down the line, we have to be ready to play each and every week,” Haskamp said. “You look at our schedule and there are four or five teams that are capable of beating us.”

Tigers’ coach Pat Ruml said the third week of the regular season, when his team travels to Sioux Falls to play at Howard Wood Stadium against Chester Area, should be one of the toughest games they play all year.

“That’s going to be a big showdown,” Ruml said. “It’ll be a good challenge for us early in the season, and our schedule is pretty tough again. We like that, especially with the power points the way they are and how important every game is.”

Ruml’s team will also play Bridgewater-Emery/Ethan.

The Tigers defeated Emery/Ethan twice last season. Howard won a game at home in a blizzard against Emery/Ethan and then took the state title at the DakotaDome later in the year.

Winner, which won the Class 11B state title last season, opens the season on the road against Hot Springs.

The Warriors finished their season unbeaten last year when it defeated Tri-Valley in the state title game on a last-second Hail Mary pass to win the game.

Winner doesn’t have a home game until Sept. 10 when it hosts Mobridge-Pollock. It also closes the regular season at home against Miller Oct. 15.
