South Dakota Arts Council fiscal year 2011 grant awards
At its April 30, 2010 meeting, the South Dakota Arts Council announced these grant awards to non-profit organizations, schools and individual artists, for arts projects during Fiscal Year 2011 (July 1, 2010 - June 30, 2011). Grant awards are contingent on dollars raised from the state’s tourism promotion tax.

Artist Fellowships: The Council awarded $5,000 Artist Fellowships to 6 South Dakota artists of exceptional talent to recognize past artistic achievement and encourage future artistic growth.
Artist Collaboration Grants: The Council awarded two $6,000 Artist Collaboration Grants, each of which provides funds for a collaboration between 2 artists to advance their work and careers and benefit the state of South Dakota.
Artist Project Grants: The Council awarded $2,000 Artist Project Grants to 5 talented South Dakota artists to fund specific arts-related projects that benefit the artist’s career and the public.
Arts Challenge Grants: The Council awarded 23 Arts Challenge Grants to support the yearly activities of the state's major arts institutions and community arts organizations.
Artist In Schools & Communities (AISC) Grants: The Council approved funding for approximately 240 weeks of Artists-In-Schools & Communities residencies conducted by professional artists at schools and other educational institutions throughout the state. Sites, in addition to those listed below, may be approved throughout the year.
Importation of Musicians Grants: The Council awarded 2 Importation of Musicians grants, which provide matching funds to support importing musicians to enhance an orchestra’s performance season.
Project Grants: The Council awarded 27 Project Grants, which provide matching funds to organizations to support community-based arts activities.
Small Organization Season Support (SOSS) Grants: The Council awarded 13 SOSS Grants to support the yearly activities of small arts organizations that don’t meet the criteria for Arts Challenge support.
Statewide Services Grants: The Council awarded 3 Statewide Services Program Grants to support organizations whose statewide missions support and complement the goals and objectives of the South Dakota Arts Council's long-range plan.
Touring Arts: The Council approved funding for 45 touring artists and touring arts groups to be used to underwrite performance and exhibition fees to nonprofit organizations in the State.
Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants: The Council awarded four $4,000 Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grants, which provide funds to master artists to teach qualified apprentices, thereby ensuring that the folk art form will be passed on to another generation.

• Aberdeen Recreation and Cultural Center: $10,000. SOSS Grant supports year-round arts activities sponsored by the Aberdeen Recreation & Cultural Center.
• Aberdeen University/Civic Symphony: $5,000. Importation of Musicians Grant supports the importation of professional musicians for the 2010-2011 Symphony season.
• Aberdeen Area Arts Council: $8,603. Arts Challenge Grant supports yearly programming of the local arts council.

• Dominant 7: $4,750. Touring Arts Grant supports the group’s tour of South Dakota non-profit organizations.
• Aberdeen Area Arts Council: $900 + travel. AISC grant support a weeklong dual-artist residency.
• South Dakota School for the Blind & Visually Impaired: $500 + travel. AISC grant supports weeklong artist residency.

• Baltic Schools: $1,400 + travel. AISC grants support 2 one-week artist residencies at Baltic Elementary and Baltic Middle School.

• Belle Fourche School District: $500 + travel. AISC grant supports one-week artist residencies at South Park Elementary.
Bison
• Bison School District: $1,400 + travel. AISC grants support 2 artist residencies in the district.

• Brandon PTA: $2,000 + travel. AISC grant supports a 4 week artist residency in the school district.

• Britton-Hecla School District: $500 + travel. AISC grant supports a one-week artist residency in the district.
Brookings
• Prairie Repertory Theatre: $5,284. Arts Challenge Grant supports seasonal programming of Prairie Rep in both Brookings and Brandon.
• South Dakota Art Museum: $23,188. Arts Challenge Grant supports the collection, preservation, and exhibition of visual art and other year-round programming at the Museum.
• Brookings Arts Council: $5,540. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Council as it maintains a gallery and art center and provides a variety of arts experiences for the citizens of Brookings.
• Brookings Chamber Music Society: $2,008. SOSS Grant supports the Society’s season of chamber and concert music performances throughout the school year.
• South Dakota Center for the Book: $7,500. Statewide Services Grant supports the 8th annual South Dakota Festival of Books, featuring 50 authors and a variety of other activities.
• Heartland Opera Troupe: $2,500. Touring Arts Grant supports the group’s tour of South Dakota non-profit organizations.

• South Dakotans for the Arts: $45,000. Statewide Services Grant supports the efforts of South Dakotans for the Arts to strengthen the mission, goals and strategies of the South Dakota Arts Council. Adhering to its mission of advancing the arts through service, education and advocacy, SoDA provides leadership in arts education and offers services to community arts councils and other arts organizations.
• Historic Deadwood-Lead Arts Council: $4,339. Arts Challenge Grant supports yearly programming of the local arts council.
• Adams Museum & House: $2,500. Project Grant supports the 4th year of a 5-year project. This year’s project focuses on the literature that influenced Deadwood pioneer merchant W.E. Adams and his family during the early Twentieth Century.
• Historic Homestake Opera House: $3,500. Project Grant supports the 3rd annual Chamber Music Festival including performances and events featuring Orlando Chamber soloists.

• Dakota Academy of Performing Arts: $3,650. SOSS Grant supports the Dakota Academy of Performing Arts (DAPA) season, including: DAPA Youth Orchestra, DAPA Chamber Groups, and DAPA Plays for Living Theater Group.
• Groove, Inc: $3,445. SOSS Grant supports the organization’s season of performances and acitivities with elementary, middle, high school, and college percussion students.

• SculptureWalk Sioux Falls: $5,000. Project Grant supports Sculpture Walk 2011, an accessible outdoor exhibiton of sculptures displayed in downtown Sioux Falls and at Falls Park year-round.
• South Dakota Music Teachers Association: $1,500. Project Grant supports the organization’s annual statewide conference, which this year will feature internationally known pedagogue, Marvin Blickenstaff.
• Sounds of South Dakota: $3,500. Project Grant supports The Sounds of South Dakota Vocal Showcase 2010’s production of I Can’t Stand Wager, composed by American composer Seymour Barab and featuring 7 regional professional vocalists and 1 pianist.
• St. Patrick’s Day Extravaganza: $2,000. Project Grant supports community performances and a SF St. Patrick’s Day parade appearance of the Khartum Temple Pipe & Drums from Winnipeg, Canada.
• Center for Western Studies: $1,000. Project Grant supports the addition of educational programming to the Center’s annual Artists of the Plains Art Show and Sale.
• Nathan Glazier: $4,000. Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant supports the artist’s apprenticeship with Celtic music master, Brian Miller of St. Paul, MN.
• Phil Baker: $7,500. Touring Arts Grant supports the artist’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.

The Center produces year-round theatre productions at the Matthews Opera House, operates an art gallery, presents touring artists, showcases local visual artists, and sponsors summer and winter art festivals and exhibitions, a foreign film series and other activities.
• Black Hills State University ~ Opera Theatre Institute: $4,000. Project Grant supports the two-week Johanna Meier Opera Theater Institute, which each summer brings in a distinguished world-class faculty to teach a 2-week opera program to high school and college age vocal artists, and offers community performances featuring institute participants.
• Termespheres & Lectures: $5,000. Touring Arts Grant supports the artist’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations
• Gordy Pratt: The original Fabulous ONE GUY: $6,500. Touring Arts Grant supports the artist’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organization.
• Dragons Are Too Seldom Puppet Theatre: $6,000. Touring Arts Grant supports the artist’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
• Dick Termes: $5,000. Artist Fellowship in recognition of past artistic achievement and encouragement of future growth as an artist.
• Chad Dahlke and Jesse Nelson: $6,000. Artist Collaboration Grant supports the artists’ initiation of a snowboard magazine that will localize the sport, showcase local talent, and use the artists’ photography of the Black Hills to illustrate the magazine.
• Bonnie Halsey-Dutton: $2,000. Artist Project Grant supports an artist exchange between European and South Dakota artists. The artist is collaborating with a London artist in bringing this common European practice to South Dakota.

Sturgis
• Black Hills Special Services Cooperative ~ Prairie Winds: $3,500. Project Grant supports Prairie Winds, a 25-year literary project of the BH Special Services Cooperative.
• Sturgis Center for the Arts: $500. Project Grant supports the inclusion of a theater component in the annual Sturgis BAM Festival.
• Sturgis Area Arts Council: $900 + travel. AISC grant supports a one-week dual-artist residency.
Tea
• Dance Network of South Dakota: $2,000. Project Grant supports the Dance Network’s annual conference, featuring classes in a variety of dance forms for regional dance students.
Timber Lake
• Timber Lake Middle School: $900 + travel. AISC grant supports a one-week dual-artist residency in the school.
Valley Springs
• Jill Groth: $4,000. Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Grant supports the artist’s apprenticeship with traditional Irish music master artist, Tim Britton from Iowa.
• Jim Groth: $750. Touring Arts grant supports the artist’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
• Trefoil: $500. Touring Arts grant supports the group’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations
Vermillion
• South Dakota Public Broadcasting: $10,000. Statewide Services Grant supports weekday broadcasts of the “Arts Calendar” on SDPB Radio and the written and audio archive of “Arts Calendar” on SDPB Internet as well as other news and feature reports that air several times a month and special programs such as “Food for Thought.”
• National Music Museum: $32,715. Arts Challenge Grant supports the Museum’s mission to serve the people of South Dakota and the nation as an international center for collecting and conserving musical instruments of all cultures and bringing people together to study, enjoy and understand our diverse musical heritage.
• Children’s Theatre Company of South Dakota: $4,000. Project Grant supports the creation of the Dakota Shakespeare Project. When completed, DSP will introduce younger children to Shakespeare and supplement the classroom study of Shakespeare by older students.
• Vermillion Community Theatre: $500. Project Grant supports the production of Fiddler on the Roof by providing internships to college students to assist with technical aspects of the production.
• Vermillion Area Arts Council: $2,800. Project Grant supports “Messy Hands” Summer Art Camp for children ages 3-14. Students have the opportunity to experience the arts through a variety of genres and disciplines.
• Children’s Theatre Company of South Dakota: $6,000. Touring Arts Grant supports the theater’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
• Discovery Mime / Movement Theatre: $4,500. Touring Arts Grant supports the company’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
• Jazz Portraits: $1,500. Touring Arts Grant supports the ensemble’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
• Rawlins Piano Trio: $1,500. Touring Arts Grant supports the ensemble’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
• Brian Begley and Mary Inman Begley: $5,000. Artist Fellowship in recognition of past artistic achievement and encouragement of future growth as artists.
• Stephen Yarbrough: $5,000. Artist Fellowship in recognition of past artistic achievement and encouragement of future growth as an artist.
• John Banasiak: $2,000. Artist Project Grant supports the artist’s selection and compilation of 200 previously unprinted photographic negatives centered around the theme, Place and Identity. The photographs will subsequently be matted, framed, and exhibited.
• SESD Arts Council: $500. AISC Grant supports a one-week artist residency in the community.

• Boys and Girls Club: $1,000. Project Grant supports DramaMatters, a theatre program for at-risk youth.
Wakonda
• Wakonda 125th Celebration: $500. Project Grant supports the production of an historical musical play that tells the story of the town of Wakonda over the past 125 years.
• Public Domain Tune Band: $1,000. Touring Arts Grant supports the group’s tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
Wakpala
• Kevin Locke & Kevin Locke Dance Ensemble: $9,000. Touring Arts Grant supports the groups’ tour of South Dakota nonprofit organizations.
Watertown
• Town Players: $6,918. Arts Challenge Grant supports Town Players’ yearly season of productions.
• Ann Taecker: $2,000. Artist Project Grant supports the artist’s creation of 2-dimensional collages, 3-dimensional pieces, and/or hanging panels to be offered as a touring exhibition.
• Town Players: $900 + travel. AISC Grant supports a one-week children’s theatre residency in the community.
Webster
• Webster School District: $500 + travel. AISC grant supports a one-week artist residency in the district.
Wessington Springs

• Olde Towne Dinner Theatre: $10,268. Arts Challenge Grant supports a yearly season of theatrical programming at the State’s only nonprofit dinner theater.
Yankton
• Lewis & Clark Theatre Company: $3,647. Arts Challenge Grant supports year-round theatrical programming of the Company.
