LUBBOCK, Texas — The Mount Marty baseball team is a single game away from a place in the NAIA college world series in Lewiston, Idaho.
The Lancers beat York College 12-5 before beating Lubbock Christian — the defending national champions — 3-2 in the first championship game. Mount Marty plays Lubbock Christian at 1 p.m. today for a place in the world series.
The Lancers scored 11 runs in the first three innings against No. 19 York and led 11-2 heading into the fourth. Nick Huston threw nine innings and gave up five runs on eight hits with six strikeouts.
Jason Schmidt was 1-for-3 with an RBI and Josh Wenande was 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
Wenande, a Mitchell native, came up big for the Lancers against Lubbock Christian. He hit a two-run, two-out single to right in the fourth that tied the game at 2. An RBI sac fly in the fifth proved to be the winner for Mount Marty.
Trey Krier threw a complete game against Lubbock Christian and gave up just two runs on nine hits. Wenande was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and Schmidt was 1-for-3.
