Hieb loses in playoff at NSIC meet

Mitchell graduate Eric Hieb was named to the all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament team after his efforts at last week’s men’s golf championship at Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn. Hieb finished second overall after losing on the first hole of a playoff to Minnesota State’s Kyle Welch. Hieb shot 8-over par for the tournament, which spanned three days and five rounds.

Mitchell graduate Eric Hieb was named to the all-Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference tournament team after his efforts at last week’s men’s golf championship at Jewel Golf Club in Lake City, Minn.

Hieb finished second overall after losing on the first hole of a playoff to Minnesota State’s Kyle Welch. Hieb shot 8-over par for the tournament, which spanned three days and five rounds.

n Kimball native Tom Thompson, a senior at the University of Sioux Falls, was honored as the Hauff Mid-American Sports/Great Plains Athletic Conference Men’s Golfer of the Week last week.

Thompson was the medalist at the Morningside Invitational Saturday after shooting an even-par 72 at Whispering Creek in Sioux City, Iowa.

Thompson is currently in ninth place individually after Monday’s third GPAC Qualifier. The top 10 individuals after the final qualifier will earn all-conference honors.

n Former Parkston standout Luke Leischner, a sophomore on the South Dakota State track and field team, set a new school record in the 400-meter dash.

Leischner posted a time of 47.43 seconds on the second day of the Jim Duncan Invitational in Des Moines, Iowa.

n Bon Homme graduate Michelle Schuch also shined for the Jackrabbits at the Jim Duncan Invite. She won the women’s shot put competition with a mark of 43-feet-9.25.

Schuch also took second in the hammer throw at the event after posting a mark of 169-feet.

n Alexa Duling, a Gregory native, helped the University of South Dakota women win the 1,600-meter relay at last weekend’s Nebraska Invitational.

Duling, a freshman for the Coyotes, teamed with Emma Erickson, Jenessa Filler and Ashley Sveum to finish in a time of 3:52.

Duling also ran a personal-best time of 1:03.19 to take fifth in the 400-meter hurdles. She also placed fifth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 14.79 seconds.

USD senior Tia Haines, a White Lake native, was sixth in the long jump at the Nebraska Invite. She leaped 17-feet-5.25.

n Cole Nicholas, a former Gregory standout, took second in the men’s hammer throw competition for Black Hills State University at the Blue Hawk Games in Dickinson, N.D., last week.

Nicholas, a junior at Black Hills, also took eighth in the shot put at the meet to help the Yellow Jackets men to a second-place team finish.

Mitchell native Kayla Haines also competed at the Blue Hawk Games for Black Hills State. Haines took sixth in the javelin throw and eighth in the 100-meter hurdles at the event. The Yellow Jackets’ women took third in the team competition.
