Thursday vote set for Mitchell Township issue

Residents of the former Mitchell Township will decide Thursday whether to re-establish the township.

Susan Kiepke, Davison County auditor, said this would be the first re-establishment of a township in state history. The election is the product of concerns about fire protection.

Mitchell Rural Fire Association members and county commissioners disagreed last year about allocating funds to cover the former township’s $17,261 assessment for its share of a new firefighting rig.

Re-establishment of the township has been proposed to better manage the former township residents’ public financial resources.

Voters residing within the former township boundaries can cast ballots from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Davison County Fairgrounds building.
