Dakota Discovery Museum celebrates National Youth Art Month with 2010 Youth Art Show

Mitchell, SD – March is National Youth Art Month and to recognize students in our region the Dakota Discovery Museum is hosting the 2010 Youth Art Show. This annual exhibit offers South Dakota students the opportunity to show their work in a gallery setting and have it evaluated by professional artists.

The arts are often considered of limited importance, while in reality they provide children the opportunity to develop skills they will need as adults. Experience in the arts develops self-esteem and self expression, as well as appreciation for the work of others. It also helps to develop the critical thinking skills vital in today’s quickly changing social environment. Youth Art Month is an annual observance each March to emphasize the value of art education for all children and to encourage support for quality school and community art programs.

Students grades K through 12 who live or attend school in South Dakota, including home schools, are eligible. Entry forms are available on-line www.dakotadiscovery.com or by calling 996-2122.

The 2010 Youth Art Show will open on March 1 and will run through Saturday, March 27 at the museum, located on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University at 1300 McGovern Ave., Mitchell. A free reception is planned for Saturday, March 27 from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Professional artists will be on hand to critique student’s work. Regular museum hours for the exhibit during March will be 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. During the exhibit, admission is free for student artists and their immediate family.
