Urban ‘Red’ Hohn, Mitchell

Urban “Red” Hohn, 84, Mitchell, died Wednesday, Jan. 13, 2010, at Firesteel Healthcare Center, Mitchell.

Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Holy Family Catholic Church, Mitchell. Burial will be in Calvary Catholic Cemetery, Mitchell. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Will Funeral Chapel, Mitchell, with a 7 p.m. prayer service.

He was born on Sept. 2, 1925, in Dimock to Mathew and Lona (Mick) Hohn.

He attended country school through the eighth grade.

He worked at various farm jobs.

In 1939, he made his home in Mitchell.

During the war, he worked in Rozum Motors basement as a turret lathe operator and drove for Redtop Cab Company, shuttling pilots and personnel from the airport into town.

On Aug. 14, 1944, he married Bernice Kozel in Mitchell.

They lived in Mitchell and he operated a moving company for 10 and a half years and Redtop Cab for two years. He was later employed at Montgomery Wards for 11 years, as a Moorman Feed salesman for 30 years, a school bus driver for 22 years and as a Traveler Insurance agent for two years.

He was a member of Holy Family Catholic Church and Moose Lodge.

He is survived by his four children: Sherril Blair and husband Jim, Germantown, Tenn.; Donna VanLaecken and husband Rich, Brookings; Vickie Muilenburg and husband Arlan; and John, all of Mitchell; nine grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, two sisters: Whilmena Hohn and husband Millard, Mitchell; and Priscilla Bohr and husband John, Galt, Calif.

He was preceded in death by his wife on Oct. 26, 2005; a grandchild, a great-grandchild, his parents, seven brothers and two sisters.
