Lives touched with kindness at store

To the angel in line at Shopko:
While I was standing in line at Shopko several days ago, someone behind me generously gave a gift for a young child who had tragically lost his parents and grandmother in an accident. This angel will never know how much this gift meant nor how much joy it brought to this little boy.
May we all realize how much our lives can be touched by people whose hearts are filled with love and understanding.

Muster some backbone, council
To the Editor:
Well, the “politically correct” crowd is at it again. Recently, Mayor Lou Sebert told City Council member Geri Beck not to give the opening prayer at City Council meetings in the absence of a member of the clergy.
Mayor Lou’s argument is that he doesn’t feel “comfortable” with that, and, you know, it is a case of “separating church and state.”
The Daily Republic quickly took up the issue in an editorial on Nov. 10, with its usual fence straddling, feigning agreement with those of us who support a City Council member offering a prayer at the state of a City Council meeting; but then coming down against it because “somebody else might not like it.”
Is it to much to expect in this coming Christmas season that our politicians could muster some backbone and respect for our Christian faith and majority? What happened to “One Nation Under God” and “In God We Trust?”
We are a Christian nation, state and community that was founded on the principle of freedom of religion — not freedom from it. If you are going to continue to mutter phrases like “separation of church and state,” at least become informed enough to acknowledge:
1. “Separation of church and state” is not in the U.S. Constitution in either words or ideas.
2. The words first appeared from a letter that Thomas Jefferson wrote to the Danbury Baptists in 1802. The purpose of the letter was not to warn the Baptists to keep their religion expressions and symbols from the public arena. Far from it. The purpose was to reassure those Americans that their government would never interfere with their practice of religion.
Our choice is clear — stand for our savior Jesus Christ now because we will stand before Him later.

GOP should do good with money
To the Editor:
This person was taken aback at the headline in the Nov. 9 issue of The Daily Republic: “GOP takes aim at Herseth Sandlin.”
I couldn’t help but think “What a waste of money will be at work.”
I challenge anybody to question my conservative record and beliefs. Stephanie has not let me down. I agree with her on everything but abortion, but the Republican record on that is not so pure either.
Stephanie is not responsible for the deficit. George W. Bush is with his unnecessary, illegal, expensive and mass murder Iraq war.
Democracy is expensive. These Republicans who want her job should let Stephanie go unchallenged. They don’t have any formula on how to pay off the national debt, the biggest problem. Let Stephanie build up seniority.
If those GOP hopefuls want to do some good, they can give their money to the Red Cross or the Republican Senatorial Committee.

Never happier since being saved
To the Editor:
Once again, we have Thanksgiving and Christmas coming up. We have had such a falling away from Christianity that I really believe many people don’t know who they are supposed to be giving thanks to or what Christmas is all about!
I myself will be bowing my head down and thanking the creator of heaven and earth for my turkey, and I will be praising God for the life of Jesus Christ at Christmas.
Many people believe Jesus is just a fable or a figment of people’s imagination. But, I say to you Jesus Christ is real and alive today. Jesus Christ is the only person that has divided time. Yes, we have the years of B.C., before christ, and we have the years following Christ’s birth, A.D., which is the Latin term Anno Domini, the year of the Lord. Jesus must have been very important.
Also, we have the holy Bible that has been around since the time of Moses. Ever since the Bible came into existence, Jesus Christ has been prophesized. Very many of these prophesies have come true. Do you suppose that is why so many people have tried to destroy the Bible? God’s word has given us the 10 Commandments. Without the 10 Commandments, where would we be morally and ethically? I believe the Bible and Jesus have set the foundation of our culture.
Since I’ve been saved, I’ve never been happier. I feel the friendship of the Lord and He comforts me. I wish I could prove to everyone that Jesus Christ is real. But it’s kind of like the song, “You ask me how I know He lives, He lives within my heart.”

Continue to have prayer at meetings
To the Editor:
We would like to ask the City Council to continue to have an invocation at their meetings.
Surely, all our city leaders desire wisdom from God and His Blessing when doing business for the citizens of our beautiful city. We would like to encourage Mitchell’s clergy to take the privilege of offering the invocation at council meetings very seriously.

Keep good, loyal people in office
To the Editor:
Another election is just around the corner, and we have some candidates that are already putting our great Congresswoman Stephanie Herseth Sandlin down.
The things they come up with are absolutely false. They are saying things our Stephanie “might” do, not what she has done.
I have never heard of anybody being criticized for something they have not done by someone who thinks it might be done. This is crazy.
Stephanie has been a loyal representative of South Dakota since taking office and before being elected. How can these candidates wanting her office make such awful statements unless they are very jealous of Stephanie’s hard work for us?
We must keep our good, loyal people in office — hopefully, not someone who is making false accusations just for sport and to oust a great representative as Stephanie Herseth Sandlin has and will continue to be for our great state of South Dakota
