A burned car retrieved from rural Mitchell and the body found within it have been transported to the State Crime Lab in Pierre, the Hanson County Sheriff’s Office reported this afternoon in a news release.
Wednesday, authorities announced an investigation into what they called a “suspicious” range fire that consumed a car in a rural area about three miles southeast of Mitchell. Authorities also announced the disappearance of 16-year-old Jasmine Guevara, of Mitchell.
Though it’s being speculated that the body found in the vehicle was Guevara, the Hanson County Sheriff’s Office said today in its news release that “the remains have not yet been identified” and an autopsy has not yet been performed. Authorities have said, however, that they believe the two incidents are related.
“Numerous interviews are being conducted and will continue as the case progresses,” today’s news release said. “Agencies will make further information available as this investigation continues and time permits.”
The public is urged to call with any information about the fire or Guevara’s disappearance. She was last seen Tuesday evening in a green, 1999 Chevrolet Malibu.
The public should call the Mitchell Police Division with that information at (605) 995-8400.
Anyone wishing to remain anonymous is urged to call Mitchell Area Crimestoppers at (605) 996-1700, or to text “mitcs” with a message to Mitchell Area Crimestoppers at CRIMES (274637).
