PIERRE, S.D. (AP) — South Dakota has turned in its first quarterly report on stimulus spending, and it shows state government has spent $219 million of the estimated $632 million in federal stimulus funds allocated to state agencies.

The stimulus funds are intended to be fully used over three fiscal years.

A release from Gov. Mike Rounds’ office says state government used $71 million in stimulus funds to balance the budget for 12 months ending June 30 and another $88 million to balance the current budget, leaving about $65 million for the fiscal year beginning next July 1.

Of the total stimulus allocation, $282 million is for infrastructure such as roads and bridges, $181 million is for education; $132 million is for public assistance programs; $23 million is for public safety; and $14 million is for other necessary state services.

The quarterly report was sent to the federal government on Thursday — two days ahead of schedule.
