Kernels finish fifth at ESD tournament

YANKTON — The Mitchell girls’ tennis team took fifth place at the Eastern South Dakota conference tournament Saturday in Yankton.

The Kernels finished with 129 points behind fourth-place Pierre’s 153 and third-place Yankton’s 168. Watertown won the tournament with 295 points and Aberdeen finished second with 259.

“I’m really happy with our turnout, because we had basically a different lineup than last year, and every single player contributed to the team score,” Mitchell head coach Gayle Klein said. “Nobody went two and out, so I was thrilled with that.”

Mitchell had three flights finish with medals, including No. 3 singles player Megan Solberg who took second.

Angie Lorenzen at No. 1 singles took third place and the No. 1 doubles team of Lorenzen and Kendra Cersosimo also took third.

“They fell victim in the seeding because they haven’t played that many matches,” said Klein about Cersosimo’s injury. “For them to come through and end up in third was great. The top half of the bracket, which they were in, was completely loaded.”

Kayla White lost in the consolation championship in the No. 2 singles flight and so did Courtney Wells at No. 4. Both Marissa Tubbs (No. 5) and Chelsea Kracht (No. 6) won in the consolation championship.

At No. 2 doubles, Solberg and Kracht lost in the consolation semifinals, and at No. 3 doubles Wells and Tubbs took fourth.

The ESD meet was the team’s final tune up before the state meet in Sioux Falls starting Thursday.
