Scotland rallies against Avon
AVON — Scotland rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Avon 3-2 Tuesday in a high school volleyball match in Avon. Avon took a 2-0 lead with a 28-26 win in the first set and a dominant 25-9 win in the second. But Scotland regrouped, securing a hard-fought 29-27 win in the third game to stay alive. AVON — Scotland rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Avon 3-2 Tuesday in a high school volleyball match in Avon.
Avon took a 2-0 lead with a 28-26 win in the first set and a dominant 25-9 win in the second. But Scotland regrouped, securing a hard-fought 29-27 win in the third game to stay alive. The Highlanders then won 25-21 and 15-9 in the next two sets to complete the comeback.
Amber-Dawn Edwards had 19 kills, five blocks and eight digs to lead Scotland. Chelsea Raker had eight kills, Aisha Abbink had 12 digs, Jaymie Barrett had 15 assists and Ashley Alvey had two aces.
Erika Rohlk had 15 kills, three blocks and nine digs to lead Avon. Gina Cuka had six aces and 26 assists, Lanae VanGerpen had four aces and four kills, Shayna Nagel had five kills and 17 digs and Voni Finck had three blocks.
Scotland improved to 3-8 with the win and will play at Parkston on Thursday. Avon fell to 6-7 and will play at the Marion Tournament on Saturday.
Avon won the JV match 2-0.
Miller 3, Chamberlain 2
CHAMBERLAIN — Chamberlain fell to Miller 3-2 on Tuesday despite losing two of the five sets by only two points, including a 16-14 loss in the decisive fifth set.
Set scores were 25-19, 26-24, 22-25, 25-21 and 16-14.
Kelsey Hunter had 20 kills and 22 digs to lead Miller. Chelsea Davis had eight kills and 28 digs and Mallory Fischer had 43 assists.
Chamberlain was led by 13 kills, 17 digs and a block from Kelsey Grassrope. Kelli Swenson had 33 assists and four aces, Rebecca Yeaton had 12 kills, Crispin Matthews had two blocks, Brooke McDonald had 18 digs and Hillary Meagher had two aces.
Chamberlain is now 10-4 and will play Kimball on Tuesday. Miller won the JV game 2-0.
Parkston 3, Tripp-Delmont/Armour 1
PARKSTON — Emma Murtha had six kills, five blocks and four aces Tuesday as Parkston downed Tripp-Delmont/Armour 3-1 in Parkston.
Set scores were 25-19, 25-21, 18-25 and 26-24.
Kammi Fiegen had a team-high seven kills for Parkston while Sam Weber had 25 assists, Alison Fergen had 21 digs, Sami Kollman had five aces, Jenna Reiser had five blocks and Molly Murtha had 18 digs.
Amanda Horn had 11 kills, six blocks, nine digs and two aces to lead TDA, which also got eight kills, 19 digs and three aces from Sam Sandau. Kaitlyn Roth added three aces, Julie Mingo had 13 assists and 11 digs, and Danielle Blume and Destinee Vogt both had eight digs.
Parkston is now 8-6 and will host Scotland on Thursday. TDA will host Corsica Thursday in Armour.
Parkston won the JV game 2-0.
Platte-Geddes 3, Dakota Christian 0
PLATTE — Kellee Griese had 11 kills and five digs and Emily Johnson had nine kills Tuesday to lead Platte in a 25-10, 25-14, 25-18 sweep of Dakota Christian.
Alex Hirt added three aces and seven digs, Chelsea Biehl had two blocks and Kendra Knudson had five digs for Platte-Geddes, which improved to 9-2.
Dakota Christian was led by two aces and two kills from Amber Baan Hofman, while Ivory Niewenhuis and Dena De Lange both had two kills as well. Chelsie Nelson and Brooke Veurink had nine digs apiece.
Platte-Geddes, which also won the JV game 2-0, will host Lyman on Thursday.
Mount Vernon 3, Sanborn Central 0
MOUNT VERNON — Sarah Vermeulen had 11 kills, 14 digs and four aces Tuesday to lead Mount Vernon in a 25-8, 25-18, 25-13 sweep of Sanborn Central.
Mount Vernon, which improved to 12-0, also got 10 kills from Chandra Koch, 22 assists from Lexie Christensen, 15 digs from Kelsey Schmidt and a block from Sara Deinert.
Sanborn Central was led by 15 assists from Kassie Pearson and three kills from Tatem Kingsbury. Jennifer Grassel had a block and Jessica Selland had seven digs.
Corsica 3, Stickney 1
STICKNEY — Laura Groseth had 11 kills and three blocks for Corsica Tuesday as the Comets best Stickney 3-1.
Set scores were 25-16, 15-25, 25-14 and 25-19.
Cecile Burke added nine kills and Cassie Bamberg had six kills and two blocks for Corsica. Emily Van Roekel had five aces, Lacey Reimnitz had four aces and 19 digs, Lacey Nepodal had 24 assists and Breanna Blom had two blocks.
Tess Wentworth had seven kills and Shelby Assmus and Jackie Niewenhuis both had 10 kills to lead Stickney. Steph DeWaard had two aces and six kills and Wentworth added three block assists.
Corsica is now 11-6 and will be at Tripp-Delmont/Armour Thursday in Armour. Stickney is now 6-10 and will also play Tripp-Delmont/Armour next.
Canistota 3, Hanson 2
ALEXANDRIA — Hanson took Canistota — which won the Cornbelt Conference volleyball tournament Saturday — to five sets, but couldn’t hold on for the win as the Hawks held on for a 3-2 victory Tuesday in a high school volleyball game in Alexandria.
Brooke DeKramer led all hitters with 18 kills for Canistota. Victoria Albers added 12 kills. Cassi Townsend had 19 assists, Carolyn Schroeder had 16 digs, Jasmine Marshall chipped in with 17 assists and DeKramer added 12 digs.
Ashley Steilen led the Beavers with nine kills and eight digs. Tracy Mathison had 18 assists, Alyssa Persson had 12 digs and Megumi Nelson had five ace serves.
Hanson is 4-12 and hosts Wagner Thursday. Canistota is 8-5 and plays Saturday at the Marion tournament.
Freeman 3, Menno 0
MENNO — Hillary Paulson had 12 kills, four blocks and four digs to lead Freeman to a 3-0 sweep of Menno Tuesday in Menno.
Freeman won 25-11, 25-21 and 25-13.
Hillary Stern added six kills and 10 digs for the Flyers. Leah Uecker had 17 set assists, Taylor Waltner had 10 digs and Kaitlyn Stern had 10 ace serves.
Liz Sayler and Tessa Goehring each had four kills for Menno, which fell to 1-9. Courtney Kessler had 12 assists and Sayler added 10 digs.
Freeman is now 5-5 and plays Thursday in Ethan. Menno is at Bon Homme Thursday.
Freeman won the JV game 25-15, 25-18.
Dakota Valley 3, Bon Homme 0
TYNDALL — Dakota Valley swept Bon Homme 3-0 (25-9, 25-16, 25-16) Tuesday night in Tyndall.
For Dakota Valley, Allyssa Wall had 10 kills, Nicole Dykstra had 28 assists and Karina Kiewel had eight digs.
Raquel Sutera led the Cavaliers with eight kills and Sara Burbach added six. Sutera also had eight digs and Danielle Kriz had five assists and two ace serves.
Dakota Valley is 9-6 and hosts Council Bluffs, Iowa, Thursday. Bon Homme is 6-11 and hosts Menno Thursday.
Kimball 3, Mitchell Christian 1
KIMBALL — Kimball improved to 14-2 on the year after a 3-1 win over Mitchell Christian Tuesday night in Kimball.
Rachel Gaulke led Kimball with six kills, 11 digs and two blocks. Caitlin Pick added 12 kills and four ace serves, Anne Knippling finished with nine kills, Maura Bickner had 19 assists and four ace serves and Natalie Munger had 12 digs.
Mariah Nelson led the Eagles with seven kills, eight digs and four service aces. Meghan Dixon had four kills and three blocks, Cara Van Zee had seven aces, Hannah Redder had seven assists and Lexy Schuman had nine digs.
Kimball, which won the JV game 2-0, hosts Colome Monday. MCHS is 3-7 and plays Thursday in Lake Andes.
Marion 3, Bridgewater/Emery 0
MARION — Cara Schardin and Allison Luke combined for 27 kills Tuesday in Marion’s 3-0 sweep of Bridgewater/Emery.
Marion won 25-18, 25-18 and 25-18.
Schardin — who had 14 kills — added 11 digs. Luke had 15 digs, Megan Kayser had 15 assists and Dannielle Hernandez finished with 10 assists.
Heather Schulte led the Huskies with 13 kills. Paige Larsen added 13 digs, Lindee Ensz had 19 assists and Emily Hofer chipped in with 11 digs.
Marion is now 9-4 and hosts the Marion tournament Saturday. Bridgewater/Emery is 4-12 and plays Thursday in Dell Rapids against Dell Rapids St. Mary.
Wessington Springs 3,
Plankinton 2
WESSINGTON SPRINGS — Wessington Springs picked up its second win of the season Tuesday when it beat Plankinton 3-2.
The Spartans won 23-25, 25-20, 25-23, 11-25, 19-17.
Courtney Powell led Wessington Springs with five kills. Julie Whitehead had 17 digs, Shelby Sandmann had seven assists and Becky Kopfmann had seven service aces.
Ellen Bucher led all hitters with nine kills for Plankinton. April Olson added 10 assists for the Pirates, who are 1-14.
The Spartans are at Iroquois Thursday and Plankinton plays Mitchell Christian Monday in Mitchell.
