Kernels lose 3-1 to Brandon Valley; fall to 3-3 on season

BRANDON — The Mitchell volleyball team grabbed the first set but lost the next three to fall to Brandon Valley 3-1 Tuesday in Brandon.
Set scores of the match were 23-25, 25-18, 25-16 and 27-25.
“Sometimes you have to have some breaks go your way, and it seemed like all the breaks went Brandon Valley’s way tonight,” Mitchell coach Deb Thill said. “They just made some nice adjustments to what we were doing.”
For Mitchell, Kerri Young had nine kills, Dana Misiaszek had eight kills and five blocks and Haley Long had seven kills.
Charlee Nelson added 33 assists and four kills, Taylor Piper had 17 digs and two aces and Kendell Smith had 10 digs.
“We were in a position to win and our effort was tremendous on the floor,” Thill said. “We just had too many errors.”
Mitchell, ranked No. 5 in the most recent Class AA South Dakota sportswriter’s poll, is now 3-3 on the season.
The team hosts Pierre at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Kernels defeated Pierre Sept. 4 for their second win of the year. The game is Mitchell’s second home game of the year. After Thursday, Mitchell’s next home game is Tuesday, Sept. 29 against Brookings.
