Mitchell goes 2-1 at quad in Huron

HURON — The Mitchell High School girls’ tennis team went 2-1 Saturday at a quadrangular meet in Huron, beating Brandon Valley and Huron and falling to Aberdeen Central.

The Kernels earned 6-3 wins over both Brandon Valley and Huron. Aberdeen Central beat Mitchell 7-2.

Playing in the No. 1 singles spot, Angie Lorenzen went 3-0 for Mitchell, and at No. 3, Megan Solberg picked up a pair of 8-2 wins and won her third match because of an injury to an Aberdeen Central player.

Lorenzen beat Brandon Valley’s Jami Koens 8-5 and Huron’s Sam Christopher 8-2. She finished with an 8-5 win over Aberdeen’s Allison Hanson.

“Angie was our big winner of the day,” Mitchell coach Gayle Klein said. “She was able to put together a combination of good shots that resulted in openings for the put away. I’ll take a lot of good shots any day over an occasional great shot.”

In the 6-3 win over Brandon Valley, the Kernels’ first of the day, Solberg beat Megan Van Egdom 8-2 and at No. 5, Marissa Tubbs beat Haylee Thomas 8-1. Mitchell also swept the doubles matches, with Lorenzen and Haley Bathke earning an 8-6 win at No. 1 doubles, Solberg and Chelsea Kracht winning 8-3 at No. 2 and Tubbs and Courtney Wells winning 8-3 at No. 3.

In the Kernels’ 6-3 win over Huron, Lorenzen won at No. 1 and Solberg beat Ela Osborn 8-2 at No. 3. At No. 4, Mitchell’s Courtney Wells blanked Shelby Bergman 8-0 and Tubbs added an 8-2 win at No. 5, as she went 2-1 on the day.

Lorenzen and Bathke lost in No. 1 doubles, but Solberg and Kracht won 8-2 at No. 2 and Tubbs and Wells won 8-6 at No. 3

In the 7-2 loss to Aberdeen, Mitchell’s lone wins came from Lorenzen and Solberg.

Mitchell is now 5-4 on the season, and will play Thursday at Sioux Falls Washington.
