S.D. winter wheat production up from last month

SIOUX FALLS – The South Dakota July 1 winter wheat production is forecast at 72.0 million bushels, up 3 percent from the June 1 forecast, according to the South Dakota office of USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).
Forecasted production is down 31 percent from last year’s record production of 103.95 million bushels. The yield, at 45 bushels, is unchanged from the June 1 forecast, but down 10 bushels from last year’s record yield. Harvested area, at 1.60 million acres, is up 3 percent from the June 1 forecast, but down 290,000 acres from last year’s harvested area of 1.89 million acres.
Other spring wheat production is forecast at 63.0 million bushels, down 8 percent from last year. The yield, forecast at 42 bushels per acre, is down 3 bushels from last year’s yield. Acres intended for harvest, at 1.50 million, are down 20,000 acres from 2008.
Oat production, at 8.14 million bushels, is down 7 percent from last year. The yield is forecast at 74 bushels, up 1 bushel from last year’s yield. Acres harvested for grain are forecast at 110,000, down 10,000 acres from 2008.
