SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) — A spokesman at Mount Rushmore says security systems will be reviewed and strengthened as needed after Greenpeace protesters hung a banner from the mountain carving.

Ranger Nav Singh wouldn’t discuss some details of what happened Wednesday because of the ongoing investigation and the desire to keep security measures a secret. But he says there was some intentional damage to security systems and that rangers are checking to see if there was any damage to the monument itself.

He said the protesters did some things to delay the response by park staff and that the group was well-equipped, well-supported and well-organized.

Eleven people are charged in federal court with misdemeanors of trespassing and climbing on Mount Rushmore to call for an end to global warming.
