Police are puzzled by a rash of cooler thefts over the holiday weekend at the Lake Mitchell campground.

Three coolers and their contents — valued at an estimated $225 — were stolen between 11 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday.

Lt. Detective Don Everson of the Mitchell Police Division said cooler thefts at the campground have been a problem for several years running.

“A lot of teens are doing it to get beer,” Everson said.

He said the best way to prevent future thefts is for campers to lock up their coolers before retiring for the night. Adding a fence around the campground would also help deter potential cooler thieves, Everson added.

He also urged campers to report any suspicious activity.
