PIERRE – Gov. Mike Rounds reminds South Dakota motorists to be especially vigilant during the Fourth of July holiday weekend.

The Governor notes that three people died in crashes during the recent Memorial Day period.

“All of those crashes were alcohol-related. All of those deaths were preventable,” he said. “Drivers should not be drinking alcohol, and all occupants should buckle up.”

A lapse of just a moment while at the wheel can be deadly, Gov. Rounds said.

“I wish everyone a fun Fourth of July, and I encourage them to make it a safe holiday by being responsible drivers,” he said.

To promote good driving habits during the coming holiday period, the South Dakota Highway Patrol will be out in force.

Last year, there were 137 crashes on South Dakota roads during the Fourth of July holiday period. Two people died in those wrecks, and 61 others were injured.
