Mount Vernon VFW falls in I-90 League tournament title game

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon 15-16-year-old VFW baseball team fell to Corsica 12-6 in the I-90 League midseason tournament championship game Saturday in Mount Vernon.

MOUNT VERNON — The Mount Vernon 15-16-year-old VFW baseball team fell to Corsica 12-6 in the I-90 League midseason tournament championship game Saturday in Mount Vernon.

Kyle Gerlach started for Mount Vernon, getting tabbed with the loss. He pitched six innings, allowed eight hits, six earned runs and five walks. He struck out three.

Offensively for Mount Vernon, Robbie Kazi was 2-for-3 with a double, Justin Davis was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and Caleb Kopfmann was 2-for-4 with a homer and two RBIs.

Corsica’s Luke Bamberg earned the win. He pitched all seven innings, allowing eight hits, five earned runs and five walks. He stuck out 14 batters.

Bamberg was 3-for-4 at the plate with a solo home run, a double and three RBIs and Adam Fink was 1-for-3 with a three-run homer.

On Sunday, the team bounced back to defeat Platte 6-3.

Brian Kluth got the win in relief of Kopfmann, who started the game. Kluth threw 2.1 innings, allowing three hits, one earned run and two walks.

Kazi was 2-for-4 at the plate with a triple and two RBIs and Kopfmann was 2-for-3 with three RBIs. Kopfmann, who hit an inside-the-park homer, had his fourth home run in as many days.

Platte’s Randy Dykstra started the game and was given the loss. He pitched six innings, allowed six hits and four earned runs. He struck out five.

Offensively for Platte, Mike Buitenbes was 1-for-3 with a triple.

The weekend split moved Mount Vernon’s 15-16-year-old team to 10-2.

In the first game of Sunday’s doubleheader, Mount Vernon’s 13-14-year-old VFW team defeated Platte 16-5.

Mount Vernon’s Brian Vermeulen earned the win. He pitched four innings. He gave up two hits, allowed five earned runs and had nine walks. He struck out three. At the plate, Vermeulen was 1-for-3 with two RBIs. Jevon Grace was 2-for-2 for Mount Vernon and Nick Miller was 2-for-4 with a triple and two RBIs.

For Platte, Chris Olson was handed the loss. He pitched five innings. He gave up 10 hits, 10 earned runs and eight walks. He had two strikeouts. Olson was 1-for-3 at the plate with a double and an RBI and Drew Purnis was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs.

The 13-14-year-old team plays again at 5:30 p.m. today in Mount Vernon against Armour.
