A chance to hear Big Band music live is coming to Mitchell next week as part of the Mitchell Area Concert series.
The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra will be performing at 7 p.m. Monday, May 11, at the Corn Palace.
The Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra has a long history with several leaders. Jimmy Dorsey began his professional career in 1913 and in 1926 he joined Paul Whiteman’s Orchestra with his brother, Tommy Dorsey. Together they later created the Dorsey Brothers Orchestra in 1927 and performed together until the brothers parted ways in 1935 and the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra came to be. In 1953, he and Tommy joined forces once again until Tommy’s death in 1956. Jimmy died not long after. Since then, there have been several leaders including Lee Castle and Jim Miller. Today, the Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra is headed up by Bill Tole and features vocalist Nancy Knorr.
Single admission tickets are $25 for adults and $10 for students. Mitchell Area Concert Society season passes are $45 for adults and $10 for students. A family ticket is $100 and admits everyone in the immediate family — parents and children.
