SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell boys’ tennis team lost two close matches Monday in Sioux Falls.
The Kernels lost to Sioux Falls Washington 5-4 and Aberdeen 6-3.
“We knew today would be tough,” Kernels head coach Gayle Klein said. “We did OK with the transition shots, but we had trouble closing out matches. We had our opportunities, but we didn’t get the job done.”
Mitchell’s Shea Patrick was the only singles player to win both of his matches on the day. He defeated his Washington opponent 10-6 and his Aberdeen opponent 10-5.
The team’s No. 1 player Tyler Osterloo won 10-6 against Washington but lost 10-7 against Aberdeen. Tyler McEntee lost both of his matches at No. 2 singles, and No. 3 Chase Jamison also split, winning 10-7 against Washington.
Drake Brands split his matches at No. 4 singles, and Jesse Gebel lost both of his matches at No. 5.
“There were a lot of close matches, but the difference was a point here or point there,” Klein said. “Team-wise, we just didn’t get it done.”
Osterloo and Jamison teamed for the No. 1 doubles tandem. They won both of their matches, but No. 2 and No. 3 doubles were both swept.
