Firesteel Master Gardeners, in conjunction with the Davison-Hanson Farm Bureau, are encouraging gardeners to plan for an excess of food from the garden by planting an extra row or vegetables specifically for the hungry in the community.
This plan is an offshoot of Plant a Row (PAR) program of the National Garden Writers Association.
“It’s a simple thing to plant, care for and harvest from just a few extra seeds or another plant. But the more people who do it, the larger impact we can have on helping feed those in need in our community,” said Carol Millan, master gardener.
The harvest from this project can be donated to Salvation Army, Love Feast, Safehouse or churches that help feed the hungry. Not only does the plan provide nutritious fresh food for those in need, but saves the fuel needed to bring produce to community organizations.
