Wynot advances to semifinals, downs Irene 18-10 in extras
The Wynot (Neb.) Expos advanced to the South Dakota Class B state amateur baseball tournament semifinals Thursday night after the defeating the Irene Cardinals 18-10 in 10 innings at Cadwell Park in Mitchell.
Trailing the Expos 10-4 in the bottom of the ninth, Irene scored six runs to force extra innings after Wynot pitcher Lee Heimes walked in three Cardinal runs.
Wynot responded with Heimes leading off the top of the 10th inning with a single and scored the go-ahead run off a Matt Hames RBI single. Heimes added a two-run double as Wynot was able score eight runs and take a 18-10 lead. Brett Wiebelhaus was able to finish Irene and the game off in the bottom of the 10th for Wynot.
Wynot (18-11) plays Clark at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cadwell Park for a chance to play in Sunday's championship game. The Cardinals are eliminated and finish the season at 16-12.
Irene took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning after Alex Loes stole second base and scored off a George Sees RBI single.
The Expos had a five-run sixth inning to take a 8-1 lead with Eric Hames hitting a two-run triple to right field. Heimes added an RBI double in the five-run sixth for Wynot.
Tyler Elder took the loss for Irene, giving up six runs off eight hits in 3 2/3 innings as he relieved Irene starter Andrew Hora. Hora gave up seven runs off seven hits in 5 2/3 innings.
Expo starter Scott Morrison pitched eight innings, giving up seven runs off 11 hits and walking five.
