Winner/Colome advances to quarterfinals with win over Lesterville
SIOUX FALLS — For the second straight year, the Winner/Colome Pheasants will play the Akron Rebels at the Class B state amateur baseball tournament.
Last year, the teams met in the opening round of the tournament, resulting in a 4-1 win in favor of Akron.Sunday, Winner/Colome advanced to face Akron in the quarterfinals after defeating the Lesterville Broncos 10-3 at Sioux Falls Stadium.
“We have something to shoot for here,” said Winner/Colome manager Kevin Graesser, whose team plays next at 6 p.m. Thursday. “Anybody who gets this deep in the tournament is a good team. We are going to have to be at the top of our game to win.”
The Pheasants did the majority of their run scoring in the early stages of the game, scoring eight of their 10 runs in the first three innings.
Winner/Colome scored four runs in the first, one in the second and three in the third inning.
Dillon Lambley got things started in the top of the first with a single to right to score Derek Graesser and Austin Calhoon for the first two runs. Graesser led off the game with a walk, while Calhoon reached when he lined a single up the middle off Lesterville starter Alex Wagner. The next two runs in the inning were unearned.
Dane Driscoll scored the lone run in the second for the Pheasants, when he was brought in on a Austin Richey two-out RBI single up the middle.
“We jumped right on them and that was big,” Kevin Graesser said. “We finally had our bats come alive after the Milbank game.”
Winner/Colome, who won the Rosebud-TMT League with a 9-0 record, got a good start on the bump from Will Burke. He threw a complete game allowing three runs on eight hits, throwing 137 pitches, 86 for strikes and 51 for balls.
“He threw a lot of strikes and we did a good job of fielding behind him,” Winner/Colome’s manager said.
Driscoll, along with Derek Graesser and Calhoon, recorded RBIs in the top of the third inning. Graesser ignited the run scoring, with a single to right, plating Sherman and Calhoon, followed with a sacrifice fly to score J.J. Farner, who singled earlier in the inning. After Calhoon’s sacrifice fly, Wagner was pulled in favor of Tyler Edler. The change in pitchers didn’t affect Driscoll as he singled down the left-field line, scoring Derek Graesser. The Pheasants were led by Richey, Farner, Lambley and Driscoll. Richey finished 3-for-5 and two RBIs. Driscoll was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, Lambley was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Farner was 2-for-5.
Lesterville ends its season 10-11. Akron beat Wynot, Neb., 8-3 in the opening game of the night session Sunday.
