KIMBALL — For many high school wrestling teams, Saturday marked the beginning of the 2013-14 season.

Thirteen schools made their way to Kimball High School for the Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes invite.

“This tournamnet is a great way to start the year,” Winer coach Matt Chambers said.

Several state qualifiers were on the mats in Kimball. The 170-pound weight class saw a rematch of the state final from last year with Wagner’s David Kocer taking a narrow 5-4 decision over Chandler Sudbeck of Philip Area. Kocer topped Sudbeck at 160 pounds in last season’s Class B state final.

At 113 pounds, Pat Aeschbacher of Winner took first with a pin fall win over Conner Bertsch of Miller Highmore-Harold, while Leo Hopkins of Andes Cetral took the 120-pound weight class. Hopkins was a state placer last year for the Eagles.

Andes Central coach Rich Stephens was excited about his team going forward adding that last year the prorgam had just five wrestlers. This year the Eagles have 15 kids out for the team.

Tyrel Haley and Sean Bice of Winner took the 138 and 145-pound weight classes, respectively. Scott Assman gave Winner another first-place finish at 220 pound with a pin fall win over Gavin Devries of Philip Area.

“Bice, coming off an injury last year, came out and looked really good, ansd Scott up at the heavyweight ,” Chambers said.

Cameron Kostal of Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica won at 195 pound, while KWLPG’s Turner Blasius gave the host team its lone first-place finisher at 182 pounds.

The team title went to Philip Area, which took five of the 14 first-place finishes and a total of 270.5 points.

Winner took second with 212 points and four first-place finishers and nine wrestlers placing in the top three of their weight classes.

“We got to see a lot of the teams from our region and you get to good idea of where you are at and what we need to improve on,” Chambers said.

MH-H was third with 164.5, Wagner was fourth with 133 points and MV/P/P-G rounded out the top five with 109 points.
