Whitney resigns as Longfellow principal
Mitchell's Longfellow Elementary School will begin the 2014-15 school year with a new principal.
Longfellow's Principal Karen Whitney tendered her resignation Friday, Superintendent Joe Graves confirmed to The Daily Republic. Graves said Whitney will pursue other opportunities in education.
The Daily Republic was unable to reach Whitney, who was in her first year as principal, for comment. Graves said it is disappointing she left after only one year, but it happens occasionally.
"I've already appointed Lisa Heckenlaible as her replacement," Graves said Tuesday.
Heckenlaible is the assistant principal at Mitchell Middle School. She is certified for the position, Graves said, and will start in the fall.
The school district has already begun advertising for a new assistant principal at the middle school, he said. Heckenlaible was not available for comment Tuesday.
